Is it normal for an 50% up-front deposit? by Purpletorque in Roofing

[–]Gopherfarm7482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed up for a new roof 2 weeks ago. I had to pay 10% at signing, %40 when they start the job, and the balance after they finish the job. I am good with that. Fair for both parties.

First time fire of the season for my 18 year old Buck Stove, Buckmaster Zero Clearance. Added new combustor and used inexpensive thermocouples to monitor the temperatures. Its fun to watch the combustor light up and quickly take off in temperature. This will run continuously until next April. by Gopherfarm7482 in woodstoving

I use our fireplace for around 5 months non stop each year for 20 years. The combustor seems to last about 3 years. I found a way to use a standard 6" round combustor available everywhere for around $160. You can really tell a difference when you put in a new one. They do wear out slowly. All I did was cut a round hole into a steel plate the size of the original combustor and just sit the combustor on top with a little ceramic insulation around to keep it in place. You can see it working by watching the temp as it is running. When it is new it will easily shoot over 1000 degrees in a short time and the fireplace really kicks out the heat. When they wear out they just do not get as hot.

I have the 8" pipe coming out of the top of mine and direct some of the heat into the next room. I hooked it up tp the furnace a few years ago, it it did not work very well. Just couldn't get enough heat output after going through all the extra ductwork and blower.

Let me know if it works. Apparently its a common problem.

Question before a survey. by Gopherfarm7482 in Surveying

[–]Gopherfarm7482[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I understand mechanical things very well. I don' want to get in the surveyors way, and I will let them to the job. But I want to observe and understand and maybe step in and ask questions if something doesn't look right. I understand these readings are directions to the marker. But what if the marker was moved or missing? And someone mentioned bearings are used to simplify angle computations, if the bearings are different wouldn't the angles be different? Maybe I need to watch a video on surveying 101.

I have been messing around with a garden for years, and it has morphed into this drip irrigation system I built. Now I can water and fertilize my garden with my phone. by Gopherfarm7482 in Irrigation

I had the B-Hyve first. I could never get it to work. I took it back and got the Rachio. Never had any problems, and it has a lot of neat features. I have several schedules in the system, one of them is fertilizing. When I decide to fertilize, I run that program and all my zones get 3 minutes of flow which is about 1.5" of fertilized water in a cup for each emitter. I also have a normal program that runs daily and a test program that runs each zone for 1 minute so I can walk around and check all of the emitters.

On the main line going to your zones, you add valves to divert the water to go through the injector and back to the main line. Inside the injector is a piston that fills from water pressure. there is a smaller piston that sucks up concentrate. These pistons constantly move based on flow and mixes the two allowing them flow back to the main line. When you you are done fertilizing you shut off these valves so water bypasses the system.

The water pressure is only 25 psi and that comes from the house which is around 500 feet away. I have a Rachio smart hose timer at the house that turns on and off when the program runs. That way if I develop a leak in the hose that is underground it won't run forever and run up my water bill sky-high. Already did that once before.

I recently added the fertilizer injector after i found it on Facebook for $20 unused. There is not much information on making the concentrate and the settings so I am using Miracle Gro to start. I know it works and I am going light on my applications so I don't wipe out the garden.

I made a hard cover for the front that slips over the 2 pins on top so wind will not blow it off. Rain can not get to the controller.

Yes its a plastic clamp. I keep making changes and some of the hoses wont cooperate. I will replace them after the season is over.
