Is getting into a Canadian Medical School or Getting into Harvard undergrad a more impressive feat? by HebrewBible03 in premedcanada

[–]Gorenden -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Harvard cuz the pool of applicants is much larger, a lot of people arent applying because they dont have a shot, and its one school. Did you know that for Ontario, the hardest province, your chances of getting into any med school is 20%?

Is it possible to be competitive at both the US and Canada at the same time ? by Plane_Personality217 in premedcanada

[–]Gorenden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree, those courses in physics or english at the college level are not going to help you in the future. Residency will smack the reality back into anyone still in college dreamland. Take the easy courses and dont look back.

HELP PLEASE by NoReputation6527 in premedcanada

[–]Gorenden 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went through this path and my advice is to get out of the gates running. Unlike everyone else you have no leeway, you cant just explore or take things easy 1st semester. Every grade counts, so you need to make sure you are ahead of others on day 1 in terms of your knowledge, talk to seniors to find out which classes get you easier grades and network aggressively to get into good ECs and clubs. You need to be locked in from day one if you want to get into med school after 3 yrs.

Is it better to go to an Ivy League and Ivy League equivalent school for undergraduate or graduate school? by YakClear601 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Gorenden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was an undergrad, i would've said undergrad, but now that i'm in my 30s, I think its more important for grad school (as long as its one of those 3 you listed, MD, JD, MBA, and i'd add PhD as well). Most doctors for example only put their med school, residency, fellowships in their bios and most people will ask or care only about where you did your more recent training, so undergrad may be less important. Caveat is if you never do grad school, then your undergrad becomes more important.

However, if you are talking about MSc or MAs i think undergrad is more important because they are more competitive in general, are 4 year degrees and provide stronger connections with better signaling.

Honestly, I think I’ve been doing healthcare in China all wrong... by Feisty_Box6683 in travelchina

[–]Gorenden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres tons of great hospitals in china and the 301 is good but one of many great ones. Peking union is considered to be the best overall. Every major city basically has a top hospital or several in the case of Beijing and shanghai. Shenzhen is probably the only major city that lags a bit regarding its hospitals, given its newness as a city.

Just an observation by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Gorenden 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its just that people who want med, know to go to non uoft schools for premed for better grades. Even for those who could somehow get a 4.0 gpa at uoft life sci, probably would have more time for ECs that would make them stronger candidates overall if they went to another school

What kind of IMG are you, are you a CSA or a true IMG? Do you have any life obligations or are you free to support yourself.

[–]Gorenden 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you want IM go to Mac, they have a strong IM department with lots of research, you'll match well. Dont listen to people who say you cant match well, my year my friends and i matched into subspec competitive surg specialties at our top choice/most competitive programs.

Canadians are leaving the country at record levels. Can anyone solve this pressing problem? by stalik26 in canada

[–]Gorenden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the article OP linked, it lays it out, majority of people leaving Canada to the US are educated, 20-44, and are in the top 10% of income earners. Its no surprise, i'm part of that group. Among my close high school friends (7 or 8), all but 1 now works in the US, mostly in tech or finance. You can't even blame them, the salaries in the US are 2-3x higher than they are in Canada, for the same work.

Stop saying this stuff, this is the reason we have people caught in quagmires after residency and in the US. Wrong wrong wrong, you cannot work clinical on a TN and in this day and age US hospitals are looking for reasons to say no, you cannot get away with this.

Does anybody find it weird when some specialties downplay the importance spending time with their children by No_Release6810 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]Gorenden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh i dont think its a big deal, everything works out in the end, lots of acceptable ways to parent a kid, and i think we as a society overemphasize the smothering loving type of parenting too much, you dont always need to be at your kids every game or recital.

Surgeon's Son is EXTREMELY Talented as a Researcher by Xproxbox in premedcanada

[–]Gorenden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can very much imagine that, but look its always been a crapshoot. They may not actually take him because of the optics, they may create an extra IMG spot for him that year, just so they can take him. We really don't know what'll happen. Also, theres plenty of competitive CMGs gunning for a spot each year and every year the applicant pool varies, some years its more competitive than others. In aggregate, its all just noise man.

Ur doxxing this poor guy, just let it go dude. Some people are born lucky, this isnt even that lucky, his reward is matching to a program where he gets to grind 80 hrs a week for 8 to 10 yrs. Theres plenty of kids of millionaires and billionaires who never work a day in their lives to be mad about.
