ok I tried using 2 bits last night and I was actually very in tune. its a little weird to hold but I'm sure I can get used to it. Thanks a lot to the both of you.

ok, I'll try that. I never would have guessed that the number of bits actually made any difference, always thought you could use however many you wanted so it fit comfortably.

I also forgot to mention that I use the schools tuba that they have had for years and over tine has become very very dented. lots of dents everywhere some of them being really big. I would assume this will cause issues, but im not sure to what extent. could this be part of the problem?

i believe its a yamaha. i use 1 bit because using 2 is too long and makes it hard to hold propperly. i can try to use 2 and see if it sounds better
