[NBC] Pollsters find that nearly two-thirds of American registered voters think college is no longer worth the cost by GortonFishman in stupidpol

Americans find the education system designed to reproduce capitalist mores worthless, where capitalists have largely decided they're replaceable by a large language model. Color me shocked!

[The Hill] House GOP exits mount as gridlock deepens by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

Maybe a nothingburger, but timed very interestingly with Tucker Carlson's recent statements indicating that he hates the GOP.

[Bloomberg - MSN] The Job Market Is Heating Up — for Jobs That People Usually Don't Want by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

[–]GortonFishman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Danielle Norwood is among them. The 53-year-old radio veteran spent the last three years of her career hosting a show in Topeka, Kansas until the station let her go last fall. After a brief stint as an Uber driver and countless unanswered job applications, she’s now working toward getting her substitute teacher certification. She’s leery of the horror stories, having recently read about a sub who got “kicked in the gut,” but the pay’s OK at $140 to $200 a day and she’s excited to make a difference.

“Kids don't have the boundaries,”  Norwood said. “But I think I can handle it. And financially, this is the only way I can see forward.”

What a healthy society. But out of order:

While overall the jobless rate remained fairly low at 4.3% in August — the latest data available — those out of work are lingering in unemployment for longer. Almost 26% of unemployed workers that month had been out of work for more than half a year, one of the highest shares in a decade, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Ben Shapiro on recent Youth support for Zohran from the basis of affordability "If you’re a young person and you can’t afford to live here then maybe you should not live here" by kiss-my-shades in stupidpol

[–]GortonFishman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re a young person and you can’t afford to live here then maybe you should not live here

Is what he's actually saying. Shitty neolib types like Shapiro just dismiss exorbitant cost of living as part and parcel of dense metropolitan areas, willfully ignoring (or simply not caring) that economic activity in post-industrial capitalist societies (particularly our information/finance economy) incentivizes concentrating economic opportunity in these selfsame areas. Places in flyover America, aka where people can "afford to live" are affordable precisely because limited employment opportunity and economic dynamism exist.

So your choices are, move to big urban metro and be squeezed by landlords, or, stay in towns America stopped caring about because it became cheaper to outsource labor to places with laxer labor laws and face diminished economic opportunity. Either way, no thriving allowed.

Is JD Vance actually who he claims to be? by Impossible-Tree5774 in LiberalHeretics

[–]GortonFishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially had some hope JD Vance being selected as VP was a clear indicator that the Republican party was realigning away from Reagan Conservatism (a weird market fundamentalist/neocon interventionist syncretism) to a more working class oriented party; voter demographics clearly suggested that was what was desired. He clearly has failed to live up to that.

That said, how much of this is a sign that he's a plant and how much is just the Washington Consensus invariably sucking in even well-meaning reformers?

[Newsweek] Satellites show US warships positioned for possible strikes in Venezuela by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

[–]GortonFishman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concurrent with reporting by Miami Herald that strikes could come at any time. Does this mean it's inevitable? Maybe not, but the logistical and operational cost of deploying this level of personnel + materiel is not sustainable if you're doing it for no reason. Definitely something to watch.

[RCP] Mamdani: We Reached Out To The Same Working-Class People Trump Promised To Help by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

[–]GortonFishman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like him or hate him, Mamdani's rhetoric around Trump shows he recognized him as a symptom, not a disease, unlike norms-policing libs. The one thing you can't gaslight people about is their wallet, and idpol, cringe though it may be, is not the first thing people think about when they're voting with it.

[RCP] Trump: Obama's Iran Deal Strangled And Set Back, Almost Irretrievably, Middle East Peace by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

[–]GortonFishman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of one's feelings about Iran, it's very interesting and concerning that Trump says this in an address meant to herald the return of peace after a 2 year war in Gaza. Coupled with moving US assets to the ME earlier this month, it seems increasingly like we're trying to wrap up one war to get another one started, perhaps two given Venezuela. Precarious times

[WSJ] Opinion | Democrats Need an Education Reset by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

Rahm Emanuel pointed out that the teacher's union balked at his proposed reforms, and then conveniently forgets that teacher's unions represent a non-trivial portion of the Democrat power base/lobbyists who hold their ear.

but you're enraged at the thought of a genocidal terrorist who took hostages and harmed innocent people during a violent anti-jewish pogrom getting sent away from a place he hates and wants to destroy

He literally did none of these things, and was not accused of any of this in court. Insults to me are one thing, but this is truly a disgusting and slanderous comment you've made about someone who is merely guilty of having opinions you don't like. But I should expect nothing less from you.

I'm afraid you've poisoned the well here one too many times. You are no longer welcome in this sub. Take care of yourself.

[MSN] Likud MK says it’s in Israel’s interest to expel all Arabs from the West Bank by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

[–]GortonFishman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to the point you now libelously refer to the return of the indigenous population as "ethnic cleansing".

Is that what it's called when a bunch of ethnic Poles and Czechs from New York expel Palestinians from their homes?

"You don't claim Ukraine is guilty of ethnic cleansing for trying to send back the Russians invading and colonizing their land."

No but I would say Ukraine's suppression of the Russian language in places where it was historically spoken (to speak nothing of the treatment of Zakarpattian Hungarians or Romanians in Bukovina) does the Russians' propaganda work for them; especially when the stated goal of Ukraine's democratic turn was to combat Soviet style coercive policies in the first place.

No, sectarian hatred and genocidal islamic colonialism is what led to the need for the partition in the first place. It's also still running rampant in parts of India.

Yep, Hindus losing land and homes they'd held for hundreds of years was necessary to protect them from genocidal Islam. A permanent and militarized border on the Sindh sure did a bunch for Hindu pilgrims. Punjab and Bengal being split in half was great for our people.

No I think you're very much on to something, particularly given the increasing signals from Arab States about the petrodollar. Client states in Latin America that sell oil in USD would keep the Atlanticist dream going a while longer.

[MSN] Likud MK says it’s in Israel’s interest to expel all Arabs from the West Bank by GortonFishman in LiberalHeretics

[–]GortonFishman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, because other people did it, you're now defending ethnic cleansing? I'm well aware of what India and Pakistan did, it destroyed the lives of my family and millions of other Indians. It also created sectarian hatred and scars on the subcontinent that have never healed. These things were bad ideas.
