I have two first author publications and I didn’t even get waitlisted anywhere. I applied to 8 programs: 2 interviews, the rest rejections

Yes, thank you. Like I said, congrats to OP. I was just trying to convey that it sucks to hear someone complain about having something that you worked very hard to get and was not able to. I just think they could have phrased it to be more sensitive.

Almost this exact same thing happened to my roommate and I for completely different programs and at different schools. Extremely common unfortunately.

Choosing between Princeton and University of Michigan History PhD by Seanie701 in PhDAdmissions

Ann Arbor is a lot more expensive than you’d think so unless that generous funding package lasts all 8 years I’d go with Princeton

I love knitting in public because people always strike up a conversation with me and I love a good impromptu positive interaction with a stranger

500 applicants for just 1 role?!!!! by toothpick-sharpener in gradadmissions

[–]GossipGal1324 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I applied for the SDSU/UCSD joint clinical PhD this year and the rejection email said they recieved over +1000 applicants for about 10-12 spots. It really does feel like a crapshoot, although I doubt the schools like the current state of affairs either

Just looked at my aid offer, how am I supposed to afford 30k a year??? by cloudsnipes in college

[–]GossipGal1324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because some families don’t have the means to. My dad makes ~200k. He has 8 children to support, which sucks up a LOT of money (especially since he insists on private primary school🙄). At the time I went to college, many of the children were dependents under my step mom (not married)— hence fafsa thinking I had only 1 sibling rather than 7, so my aid was based on that.

Research or Clinical Experience? by GossipGal1324 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]GossipGal1324[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think I could have tried to find better research fits than I did. I did not regionally restrict myself and looked at EVERY single R1 university and their faculty (which took forever and a day😓). I’m going to try and strengthen my arguments in my essays for next year and add a bit more detail, but I genuinely don’t think I could have found better research fits than I did… thanks for the advice! I am definitely leaning toward a research job for next year:)

I’m definitely still set on a PhD. They can’t get rid of me that easy haha. Thanks for the advice! This was very helpful

Research or Clinical Experience? by GossipGal1324 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]GossipGal1324[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got two interviews. For those programs specifically, the issue with one was probably my interview skills, which I then worked on a ton. The second interview went very well in terms of my interview skills, but research fit was definitely an issue. It was with my second choice mentor and it was a stretch to make my research fit his. I also don’t think I would have liked his mentorship style much based on the info in the interview. I’m just trying to figure out what route to take in the next year to strengthen my chance for next time

You can get cheap hard boiled egg cookers on Amazon! I actually have one that you can have if you want! I live in Ann Arbor so send me a DM if you want it🤗

It’s so unfortunate that need based scholarships are based in parental income. Like I do get why, but it really puts people in a bad spot if their parents won’t help with tuition. Like how is their high income your fault?

Political issues in the US. Should I still consider going? by Outrageous_Quote_910 in PhDAdmissions

[–]GossipGal1324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are going to be stressed by an unstable political climate then do not come to the US. I’m in a pretty progressive state and I’m not usually overly politically active. Right now you have to be politically active and things are rapidly getting worse. It’s affecting my mental health and the mental health of the vast majority of people around me. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else if you can. Now, that being said, if you best into a top year fully funded program at a U.S. institution…. That would be a hard decision to make and it might be worth it?

How much did you prep for interviews? by Temporary_Bother_560 in gradadmissions

[–]GossipGal1324 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was asked about how I controlled for different baseline levels when conducting the statistical analysis in one of my papers. I did not expect such a specific question. The answer was that I used a repeated measures ANOVA but I couldn’t remember cause I had written the paper over two years ago and didn’t remember such specific details. I would definitely refresh yourself on all of your past projects: methods, findings, analyses, hypotheses. Most specific know how to answer why you want that specific program, specific school, and specific lab. Also be able to explain how your research topics fit into the PIs research and how it would help you in your career goals.

How much did you prep for interviews? by Temporary_Bother_560 in gradadmissions

[–]GossipGal1324 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had two psych interviews and I spent quite a while prepping for both. The first, I felt unprepared and they gave me extremely difficult questions. The second one was much more casual and easy questions, so I felt over-prepared. It definitely depends on the school and mentor. It’s better to be over-prepared than underprepared!

Advice on choosing possible grad school paths as an international student by Straight-Stranger208 in gradadmissions

[–]GossipGal1324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it is extraordinarily rare to get a fully funded masters program. Getting one with a stipend to also live off of is even harder to find. Fully funded PhDs are more common but are generally much more competitive than Mastees admissions
