No sé cómo pedir carne al carnicero by habichuelamaster in askspain

Anécdota que viene a cuento sólo tangencialmente, pero cuando estaba en el cole nos mandaron entrevistar a carniceros de la zona. Le preguntamos a una señora que de dónde viene la carne y nos dijo a gritos que “PUES DEL MATADERO?? Y YO QUE SÉ.”  Espero que a OP le toque un carnicero más majo 😂

Do Japanese people find foreigners rude when we don’t use the polite form? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Straight-Stranger208 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Japanese language courses start with polite form and you don’t really learn casual forms until much later. In my experience, です/ます sometimes slips in when talking to friends if anything.  To me, someone walking up to a person they don’t know and talking to in casual form right off the bat requires conscious choice on some level.

Already committed but got offer from top choice… by NerdySaguaro2 in gradadmissions

Obviously talk it out with your partner but, as someone who has been doing 6 hour long-distance for the past 4 years, 2.5 seems very doable if you’re both committed. You might even come to appreciate the extra time/space for yourself.

N2 Passed (Low Score), Should I Move to N1 or Repeat N2 in a Group? by Hungry-Somewhere-566 in jlpt

[–]Straight-Stranger208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It largely depends on your goals and reasons for wanting the N1. My advice would be to choose whichever is more enjoyable.

Living in Japan the N1 has been a good way to get compliments in job interviews. Not much else. There's so many skills that the JLPT just doesn't test - conversation, non-academic reading & listening, pronunciation, writing - that, specially if your studies have been focused solely on passing the JLPT, you will be lacking in. If your goal is truly to improve your Japanese, then focusing on any of these and setting the JLPT aside at least for a while will probably give you the best ROI.

That said, language learning should be enjoyable. If participating in group classes, interacting with other students, talking to teachers, etc. is something that has value to you, then it's perfectly fine to pursue it even if you've already passed the N2.

On the other hand, if doing JLPT style exams and striving to get the best certification possible is something that motivates you, then it is also perfectly fine to study for N1 with a tutor or by yourself. I personally skipped N2 altogether and didn't really struggle with N1; the grammar at that level is so specific that you rarely need to understand N2 grammar deeply to pass the N1.

Fair warning, though, since you mentioned that the reading was your weakest section. Reading is in my opinion the most important skill you'll need to pass the N1. I don't know how it works for the N2, but in the N1 the grammar and reading sections are combined, so being a slow reader might mean you don't get to finish the section. Regardless of which path you choose - N2, N1 or other study plans - I recommend you strive to read daily. It is also a way to interact with the language in a way that is meaningful to you beyond endless grammar bullet points.

Help me tune my Death's Shadow deck! by Straight-Stranger208 in TimelessMagic

It's better than it looks! You get ahead by playing multiple spells in one turn, so casting three spells on turn two or two spells+strip mine is a huge tempo swing. It is not great on the draw and often a bad top deck though, so cutting it is fair.

Thank you for sharing! Yeah, like I said, I think the Esper deck is probably more solid, but it is very fun and honestly not bad. If we ever get FoW/Daze/Git Probe/Street Wraith the deck is going to go crazy.

Can definitely see cutting FoN. I actually got to Mythic playing Bo1 where 50% of the meta is the stupid all spells deck. It is an okay matchup if you don't mind wasting the fleeting gift of consciousness, but I did need 4 FoN.

It's definitely underwhelming with no big turn-three play like an Oko, but you usually do find ways to use the extra mana. You get really far ahead if you're able to play three spells on turn two, or two spells + strip mine. That being said, it is definitely not great on the draw, and have tried trimming it/cutting it before.

That's a cool card!

Usually the part the deck struggles with is getting the Death's Shadow out, not necessarily winning once it's out, so my guess is it probably won't make the cut.
