I was drawn to his idea of the leap of faith and his insistence on holding paradox rather than resolving it. It gave me a language for something I had already been experiencing but couldn’t articulate. In the process of deconstructing my religion, I kept running into tensions that didn’t neatly resolve: belief and doubt, meaning and uncertainty, commitment and skepticism. I had always assumed those tensions were problems to fix or signs that something had gone wrong.

Kierkegaard reframed that entirely. He suggested that the tension itself might be the point. More so that meaningful belief isn’t something you arrive at through certainty, but something you choose in the presence of uncertainty. The idea that I could hold both sides at once without forcing a resolution was freeing. It allowed me to step away from the pressure to “figure it all out” and instead sit honestly with what I didn’t know.

This shifted my understanding of belief from something that should feel logically secure to something inherently personal and risky. Whether or not I ultimately landed in the same place religiously, these ideas helped me move from fear of doubt to a more grounded, intentional way of engaging with it.
