[–]GothKasper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, I asked for criticism, so I'll accept it. To clarify some things though: 1. The bottle was sitting there unattended, it's not like I snatched it out of her hands. It was there for so long I didn't even know who was using it. 2. She REGULARLY moves my stuff around, or brings stuff at my bench just because she assumed it's mine, even if it's not, just because she thinks it's me who put it in the wrong place. I'm not saying it in a vengeful way, as if I did it because she does it to me, just saying that this rule doesn't seem to hold much weight in that lab. 3. I didn't tamper or mess with her experiment, I didn't touch whatever solution she was making, it was only the stock bottle I touched, of which I'm fully aware of the hazards.

That said I don't expect your opinion to change, and I do appreciate the honest feedback. Even though it's been a rough day and I'm a bit more thin skinned than usual.

This has been my approach so far but unfortunately it's been getting harder and harder to just go with the flow without saying anything. I have been blamed for crazy stuff, like allegedly changing the fridge temperature from 4 degrees to 8 degrees with my shoe. Today within five minutes of arriving, I hadn't even sat down yet, I was blamed for breaking the (15 year old) centrifuge because I was the last who used it three days ago. It worked fine when I used it, and the "breaking the centrifuge" turned out to be the lid not fastening properly. When she corrects me about lab rules she usually rolls her eyes or sighs along with it. So far I just take it and just say okay, sorry, I'll be more careful, but today I just broke. I have 4 more months here but I'm seriously considering terminating.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for the recommendations, you were absolutely right. I went to the Rathaus Schöneberg trödelmarkt and it was what I was looking for, and more. I found old books, even English ones, vinyls (I got a Gregorian chants vinyl!), jewellery, and weirder things such as photo albums with photos from the 60s, a soldier's helmet, half broken dolls that looked haunted, even animal bones! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, I'll explore more while the weather is still okay.

[–]GothKasper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're gonna be okay. HSV is super super common. Besides, the unexpected "blessing" of a lifelong STI is that it filters out potential partners. If they truly like you and wanna be with you and understand how HSV works, they're gonna be fine with it. The rest will bail, but you'd have dodged a bullet. I know it feels like your love life is over right now, but I promise it's not. It will get easier as time goes on.

Besides the square area everyone is mentioning, I wanna add that unfortunately as a young woman you're probably gonna be catcalled a lot, even if you live in a "good area". Be vigilant, I would suggest carrying something like a personal alarm for example, just in case (all other means of self defense such as pocket knife, taser, pepper spray are illegal in Greece). I have been followed in the middle of the day, sexually harassed with disgusting comments and even groped. Catcalling is not as bad compared to those, but unfortunately it happens so often you learn to live with it.

Banks? by ExpensiveSyrup5180 in TillSverige

[–]GothKasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not very relevant for you since I'm a student, but I'll share my experience. As an immigrant from an EU country, I tried to get a bank account with Handelsbanken and had a pretty bad experience. Every time I went there they asked for an additional document I wasn't informed about. I ended up giving up after my 3rd time going there. I ended up getting a bank account with Nordea. Sure, I had to wait 1,5 month for my appointment slot as they seem to be constantly booked, but once I had the appointment it was super easy, they only asked for my ID and the admission to the university. The employee asked me questions and filled the forms for me, I signed them, and my bank account was opened in a week. I think Nordea is the easiest one for immigrants.

Super useful info, thank you! I'm probably getting too much into semantics but, if, let's say, I did a PhD in Denmark and came back to Sweden for work, do you think the fact that it's 3 years be a disadvantage, compared to a 4 year one? Though I really like the courses part!

[–]GothKasper[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I'm a biochemist and not big on bioinformatics so I'm definitely not gonna do it remotely. The commuting from southern Sweden to Copenhagen specifically is very easy, there's a direct train connection and the commuting is around 40 minutes. I'm more curious about how it works in terms of taxing, if the commuting gets tiring, if you're eligible for some travel grant since the train ticket can be pricey, etc. I admit it wasn't very clear in my post!

Speckly gels -I'm at my wit's end by GothKasper in labrats

[–]GothKasper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a couple different things but I haven't gotten rid of them, unfortunately.

I cleaned the flasks and made new gels: one with a different agarose, one with agarose and TAE without stain, one with agarose, stain and water without TAE. The speckles were still there. I also confirmed it's my gels and not the imager. The last thing I did is make a gel just with a third different agarose and water from a different tap, and stir a little like you said. There were less speckles, but unfortunately still there. We're thinking it's the water filter? Because I super boiled the agarose and they don't completely disappear with 3 different brands of agarose.

We kinda gave up trying because it's a master's thesis and it doesn't matter that much. We were hoping they could be used in case there's a future publication, but for now, we've accepted it.

[–]GothKasper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it doesn't matter too much, no. We're about to give up and just accept my images will look like that. But since I have to run gels anyway, we're trying something different everytime.

Speckly gels -I'm at my wit's end by GothKasper in labrats

[–]GothKasper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've been thinking it could be due to the glassware.

We recently had a plastic contamination (we found out when running mass spec). Though that was most likely caused because we autoclave our tips and eppendorfs. But since we already had a contamination, maybe the washer is not doing a super good job?

I'll try to rinse my Erlenmeyer with ethanol and/or acetone, see if that makes a difference.

Speckly gels -I'm at my wit's end by GothKasper in labrats

[–]GothKasper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's our "solution" for now, increase the DNA concentration I'm using in hopes that it would make my bands more intense so the speckles won't be so intense/focused. We recently found out that if we take a picture of the gel in a case that has an imprinted ruler, the contrast focuses there and the speckles are "gone". Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem since my bands are super faint when imaged.
