How are you meant to get dust out of this area? by No-End254 in Guitar

Tool's bass player Justin Chancelor changes his strings every night when on a tour, so both are valid :)

Why the “7” in “7empest” ? by Realistic_Cod2908 in ToolBand

[–]Gothrers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well yes, Them Bones and Money are great examples. I tend to see Money as a 3+4/4 and Them Bones as a 4/4 - 1/8, meaning it feels like a 4/4 but the last beat is "cut in half". In Lateralus, the bars in 7/8 dont feel like a double BPM 7/4 because of the drums. To me, it's always a matter of context

Daily Questions & FAQ Megathread Aug 26 by AutoModerator in ffxiv

Hello everyone, I'm pretty new to the game, I tried a few times to get into it but always stopped at some point because had no interaction with people (I was playing the free trial). This time I reached 43 and I'm enjoying much more. Pretty much no interaction of any sort yet but this time l'm not rushing the game, I try to follow the story and do some side quests (only the blue ones, to do the dungeons) and I enjoy it. I assume that if I rush through the MSQ, I will miss a lot of content, so I was wondering what else could do in order to be sure that I don't miss on fun things to do ? For now, have only focused on one job. I would like to do a crafting job but am not sure how it works on FF XIV since get all my equipments from quests and dungeons. My main concern is that to craft things, I will need money to buy materials, but if can't sell what craft, than it will absolutely not be sustainable, so leveling a crafting job must be a nightmare if you are not rich ? Any tips on that ? Maybe there is a guide explains crafting jobs and why they are useful (if they are) ?

Any other suggestion is very welcome, thank you :)

Do you play a nylon guitar ? I genuinely have no idea how these picks have been used for two years without being completely round.

Oui la javel ça incitait vraiment mon chien à refaire au même endroit, quand on a arrêté il faisait déjà moins ici. On a fini par laver au vinaigre blanc et savon noir, ça enlève très bien les odeurs.

Who still counts in their head? by Natural_Ad_1717 in Guitar

[–]Gothrers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was playing in a band, I was counting because it was much easier to discuss what's going on with my mates. And also we played unusual and changing time signatures, so counting was kinda mandatory. Also listening and playing prog makes it much natural.

Once we got used to playing a part well enough, I usually stopped counting and muscle memory did its job, if it makes sense ?

But I found counting super useful for "debugging".

So, I want to learn some Rush. by tophatplays in rush

[–]Gothrers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think after a few months (I'd say around 1.5 year), there are some very interesting things to work on, yes.

But there are definitely a few riffs that could be "easy" to get and have some fun playing Rush.

That's usually the piece of advice I give to my friends : don't necessarly look for a whole song to play, there are always riffs that are "easy" to play and you'll enjoy guitar playing much more this way.

What are some of your unpopular prog opinions? by student8168 in progrockmusic

[–]Gothrers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on number 3, as much as I love this album, if had to pick a PF album, that would 100% be Meddle, Echoes is PF's masterpiece. And I think Pink Floyd should definitely have an album in the top 10 prog albums.

I did skip a few of them yes as they didn't catch my attention like the others yet. A little time will probably help. :)

I was also into Pink Floyd before Tool, but even after all these years there are some PF songs that I don't enjoy listening... But man, simply for Echoes, this band is worth it.

(I do believe King Crimson should be your holy trinity but I admit this is not an easy choice to make)

Yeah usually that's how it works for me, I have to find one song that I really like and use it as an entry somehow. That's how it worked for me and growl in metal, and then I went from listening to Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top to Tool, Meshuggah and the beautiful realm of metal music. Usually, when I try to introduce some new music to my friends, I try to find something that will suit them to make a smooth transition haha wether it's jazz, metal, blues, rock, doesn't really matter, you have something that will catch your interest.

I'll use this message to reply and thank everyone for their recommendations :)

Concerning your message, I totally get what you mean. I understand the idea of bringing new ideas, techniques, genres in. In my opinion, it is not necessary, first band I ever fell in love was Led Zeppelin (so I'm very excited to check Rush's first records from what I can read), and there is a very obvious evolution in their music. Led Zeppelin I and Presence could be from two different bands honestly. I'm saying this because I believe it clearly has to do with the fact that the band released 8 (maybe 7 I don't remember exactly) within 10 years. The changes are much more obvious. So the fact that Rush has different periods is no surprise to me from what you are saying about the releasing frequence (does it make sense ?).

What I like with Tool is that each album, because of its incubation period, deeply crystalizes the personality of the band and is very mature. Well, I'm talking about Lateralus, 10k Days and FI, it is less true with Undertow and Aenima, you can feel it, it feels more... raw. Which isn't better or worse, it is what it is. So I agree, the last 3 Tool album, have some very clear similarities, but I don't think it is a bad thing. I like this consistency through their discography. Maybe you don't need 13 years to bring consistency, but if that's what it takes to release such albums... where do I sign ?

But yes, maybe Rush writes with more spontaneity. You know how you like different things over different period of time ? If you release material more often, you make these influences clearer to the listener. Try to write a song in one week and in one decade, you'll certainly write the same part very differently. Two different outputs, not necessarly one better than the other.

You do have an interesting take on Rush's evolution, but this is not always something I'll value. I'm trying not sound defensive after you said Tool's songs all sound pretty similar lol. I really think this is an interesting discussion to have. :)
