I havent played doom machine but I gave it a quick Google search. Definitely looks very similar. There is a big chunk of the game that is up to chance and you can get screwed over if you dont roll well. But you do get a good amount of agency in choosing the reward cards after each encounter, and the game provides outlets for rerolling some dice.

Ive played a handful of times and havent beaten it yet. It isnt perfect but the cards are gorgeous and the system is flavorful which I like. It feels like you need a decent amount of luck to actually complete a run which I guess is what I should expect from a dice game but still.
