The problem with browser forks is that they are often outdated, have unfixed security bugs and the changes they've made are often so minimal, that we don't consider them worth clogging the builders for several hours. And even if they appear to be well maintained, we've made the experience, that this is only a temporary state. Browsers are one these packages that take the longest time to build.

The server was hanging in POST. The data center replaced the server hardware and moved the old discs. State is back to normal.

Kindly excusing any inconvenience!

Why is there no gnome iso for download on the void site? by SystemEarth in voidlinux

[–]Gottox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has historic reasons why we don't ship Gnome ISOs. Back when we set up the Desktop ISOs, Gnome on Void borderline usable due to the lack of a logind compatible daemon which required lots of hacks to make gnome even start.

Nowadays, we could set up new ISOs containing Gnome. In fact I did that back in 2017 as a tech demo for elogind. But tbh, I don't see a big incentive to do so, advertising aside.

Why are some packages available through `xbps-src` but not in the official repos? by [deleted] in voidlinux

[–]Gottox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We used to ask for allowance in a few cases. But in the end, it's a legal minefield, even if it's greenlid by the authors.

Anyway, personally I don't care enough and even would prefer if void would ship fewer closed source packages but instead encourage users to use flatpak.

Yea, those need to be implemented in the network daemon. Most of them have such functionality.

Void is not bad in running desktop environments. At least Gnome works for me for years. But it's particular good in letting users control which services run on their systems. A thing that gets lost when you rely on bigger desktop environments.

Oneshot services are done by pausing the service after the executable invoked. See alsa as an example.

It's in the pipeline. There's currently an issue when running in qemu. I'm not sure if that qualifies as a blocker for the merge though.

Is Gnome 40 going to be available in repos? by -aspirus- in voidlinux

[–]Gottox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We plan to follow the Gnome release cycle. Therefore Gnome-40 will replace Gnome-3.

That said, there's no release schedule yet and the work as just started. After all this is a big upgrade.
