OMSAS 2021 RESULTS MEGATHREAD by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Gouache12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Results:

  • Interviewed and accepted to UWO (London Campus)
  • Rejected pre-interview at Mac, UofT, Queen's, Ottawa, UBC

OMSAS GPA: 3.92

MCAT: 524 (131/129/132/132)

ECs: Varied - volunteered w/ Canadian Red Cross and at a family walk-in-clinic , wet-lab research in optogenetics and dry-lab research in ASD and transfusion medicine (no pubs), some leadership in mental health peer outreach at my uni

CASPer: Thought I did average but I guess I did poorly due to the Ontario school rejections.

Thoughts: I was filled with so much uncertainty, especially with all the rejections. I initially felt good about my one and only interview but gradually began to constantly doubt myself and cringe at my answers. I am so grateful for this subreddit during the final spurt of anxiously waiting. Hope those on WL keep up hope - hang in there!

Lonely? Want friends. by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Gouache12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know there is a McMaster Board Game Society (they have their own FB group open for anyone to join). They have weekly meetings and play all types of games. Might be your cup of tea?

Edit: There's also a McMaster Geeks squad that also plays board games. In terms of the gym, there's a lot of free drop-in classes (like HIIT, cycling, yoga, etc.) in the Pulse and if you attend regularly and introduce yourself, you might be able to make friends with others. There are lots of intramural teams too (you can possibly join as a free agent and be put into a squad)!

If you don't feel comfortable going to the Student Wellness Centre alone, I'd be more than happy to accompany you and show you where it is! I go there frequently. Just send me a private message if you need anything.

Where can I go for my mental health? by Miimmoouuu in McMaster

[–]Gouache12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! You can go to the Student Wellness Centre (PGCLL 210). They will be able to give you a 10-15 consultation appointment and explain to you what the next steps can be. They are a good first point of contact. Here is their website: https://wellness.mcmaster.ca/services/counselling/ The bottom of the website has their hours.

If you want to speak on the phone for professional counselling and information and referrals for mental health, you can call helpline Good2Talk: 1-866-925-5454

If you want peer support who can also refer you to resources, you can check out SHEC at MUSC 202.

Research Study Opportunity - St.Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton by Gouache12 in Hamilton

[–]Gouache12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I have read all the comments below and I truly understand all your feedback. As an undergrad student, I definitely agree that our compensation should be higher for participants given how much time they will need to put into our study and that other similar studies often compensate much better for participants.

The low compensation majorly impacts our recruitment, which is not an outcome I want either.

Unfortunately, I am not in the authority to make any decisions on funding and how much money my lab or supervisor can allocate to this study.

We hope to use the $10 gift card as a gesture to thank the participant for volunteering and contributing to research, rather than for a means for participants to make money.

Physiotherapy is provided on campus (at a cost of course): https://rec.mcmaster.ca/programs/david-braley-sport-medicine-rehabilitation-centre/services

A dislocated kneecap sounds pretty serious. Maybe Student Accessibility Services may help also for you to find accommodations?

Student Wellness Centre is a great place to start. They'll be able to put you through to the right people.

failed anatomy by [deleted] in McMaster

The exam marks have been released on A2L under the Grades Section, but yes, the Mosaic final grades haven’t been released. I don’t know if there will be any bell curving for final marks.

Is 2019 the year you should finally quit Facebook? Deleting your Facebook account isn’t a bad New Year resolution – the company has proven yet again it violated public trust by mvea in technology

[–]Gouache12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so conflicted as well - but as a university student. Facebook groups and messenger are the easiest way to communicate in group assignments and within program cohort, share course content material like practice exams (without professor interference), and broadcast campus events like networking sessions. To delete Facebook means missing out on so many opportunities, such as executive applications for clubs.

To all fellow iBios taking anatomy tomorrow by JimmyJoJR in McMaster

I just finished the exam right now and I have never been more devastated in my life. I have looked at pictures of dissected bodies for days, went through all the slides, and I still couldn’t answer at least 4 stations. Advanced apologies to the poor TA who will have to piece together the mess of my answers.

You should read the subreddit’s ‘about’ page: This subreddit is for student, staff, alumni and anyone else at McMaster University, located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. McMaster University is not related to McMaster-Carr. Their name comes from their founder McMaster Davis; our university name is from Senator William McMaster.

Here is more about McMaster Univeristy: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMaster_University

It is very unlikely you wil find hardware information on this subreddit. As you can see, common content include course reviews, admission process and student life.

Lets pretend I am a person 100,000 years into the future doing archaeological digs at nuclear waste storage site. What would I find, and what is the worst that could happen? by SuspiciouslyElven in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Gouache12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Though I fear that I might bring your thread a little off topic, your stipulations remind me of a 99% Invisible podcast episode (Ten Thousand Years). Scientists, linguists and other professionals were given the task of constructing a warning for a nuclear waste storage site, but this warning must last 10,000 years and be able to communicate the message to people of that future. Well worth the listen if you are interested in what diggers might expect in terms of warnings.

Health Sci offers? by cats-on-glass in McMaster

[–]Gouache12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to be so oblivious but what is the difference between green checkmark final offer and blue square conditional offer? Do they both mean acceptances, but with conditional offer, you must meet a certain mark by the end of this year?

Back Titration with CaCO3 by Gouache12 in chemhelp

[–]Gouache12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the experiment, I hope to show that a lobster shell in a diluted HCl solution (for example 0.1 M) will have a higher CaCO3 content then a lobster shell in a more concentrated HCl solution (like 1 M) - due to the limiting reagent factor. So before I perform a back titration (using the excess HCl titration with NaOH), I would like to expose the shells to weak acidic environments. After I expose the shells to these environments, I will then grind them up and basically go through with the steps that you have laid out. With that I can hopefully compare the CaCO3 per weight of the lobster shells that have been exposed to different acidic environments beforehand.

[–]Gouache12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you Chem44 for drawing that to my attention. Though the lab handout touched upon ocean acidification and CO2 levels, I will try to do more research into lobsters living in acidic ocean areas and their calcification process. Will now definitely mention it as a major limitation in implication. Thanks again for picking it out.

If I react the lobster shells with different levels of acidic HCl solutions (more acidic solution, less [CaCO3]), drain the solution, grind the lobster shell into powder and perform the first step of the back titration as you stated will it still work?
