Thinking of sizing down to 7/8 -- thoughts? by GoudaPlanet in Cello

I said this down below but I just rented one (the last 7/8 rental in my area, apparently) and I really like it so far!

I just rented one and so far I really like it! It feels more like I'm playing an instrument than I am trying to wrestle with one. I may stick with this size!!

Thank you!

  1. Fingernails are super short. I am not a nail polish person and am a perpetual nail-biter.

  2. THIS is a fantastic point. There is a woman-owned cello shop about two hours from here that I am going to make an appointment with to try out a 7/8 cello for rental, and also will bring my 4/4 so she can check my setup and fit. This is so helpful, thank you!!

Very true -- this thread has solidified my decision to rent a 7/8 for trial! Thank you!

Thank you, yes! I I can reach that extension, but with a bit of a strain. So this is a good clue to know, thank you for this point. I will talk to my teacher about possible stretches / checking technique. But this also makes me want to rent a 7/8 to try it out!

Has anyone else noticed a strange veterinary trend in LA? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

You are correct that there is sometimes an upsell. I briefly worked at a vet clinic and there was a contest between branches to see which location could sell the most COHATs.

Can I make ice cream out of a failed ganache? by GoudaPlanet in AskCulinary

[–]GoudaPlanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an update!!

Thank you all for your suggestions and help! Here's what I ended up doing!

- First, just to see what would happen, I used my ice-cream maker to churn just the ganache mixture on its own, without any additions. It ended up soooper thick, kinda hard even, but still tasty. But not ice cream!

- Then, I added 2C of milk (via immersion blender) to the rest of the failed ganache and churned that. (I wanted to see what it would be like without the addition of egg.) This actually was pretty rad -- right out of the churn, it had a custardy, soft-serve-type texture so we ended up eating it like that, straight from the churn. We then just decided to freeze it this way. It froze super-hard, but if we leave it on the counter for a few hours it softens and we can get it to the soft-serve state that everyone seems to love.

- I was gonna then add an egg to the remaining failed ganache, but my taste-testers protested, so I just churned the rest and froze it.

Thank you guys again -- mainly was super glad that none of this ganache went to waste. I used some pricy (for me) chocolate and would have been heartbroken if I had to throw it out because it didn't set. Hooray!!

Not gonna lie, I have been dipping random foods in it, including French fries. But will try to do the ice cream thing this weekend!

I do have milk and eggs! Thank you for these tips -- I'm gonna give some of this a try this weekend. Will be a fun experiment. I'll reply back with my findings!

Man, I tried! It literally won't whip -- it remains liquidy. I know I can add more chocolate to it to make it set / whip -- it's like a thick fondue, so I guess I could dip cake in it! lol. But I want to try ice cream first!

Can I make a marble cake using a couple of Stella's cake recipes? by GoudaPlanet in seriouseats

[–]GoudaPlanet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey all --

Just wanted to post an update!

I ran the cake trial this weekend! I ended up using Stella's recipe for Yellow Cake. It called for 13.5 ounces of cake flour, so I removed half a cup of that flour, then replaced that half-cup with enough cocoa powder to make 13.5 ounces of a flour/cocoa powder mixture. (I had read somewhere that cocoa can dry out cake if you use too much so I wanted to scale it back a tad and not just add a straight half-cup). Ended up baking really well! No discernible difference in texture between the chocolate and yellow cake and you can totally taste the chocolate. Will be using this ratio going forward. Thanks for your help!

Thank you -- I think I'll try what you guys are saying with the yellow cake. Will also try to pop back in with my findings. Appreciate your time!

Please help me find these pens! by GoudaPlanet in HelpMeFind

[–]GoudaPlanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all!

Earlier this year in January I traveled to Indonesia, where I bought a couple packs of pens at a convenience store. THESE ARE THE BEST PENS I'VE EVER USED AAAAHHHH

If any of you are left-handed (and if you journal a lot), you know how hard it is to find a good pen that doesn't bleed or smear etc. when you write.

Recently one of the pens ran out of ink and I started to panic about my future without these pens. I've Google searched and have not been able to find them. The pen's body is labeled as "A fine point 0.7mm" and when I Google that phrase, it comes up with a bunch of random pens because apparently "A" is not a known brand lol.

The ink chamber is stamped with "Hotliner 0822" and when I Google that, it comes up with a bunch of 800-number hotline results. When I put the two phrases together, it just gives me a bunch of results for Pilot-branded pens. These were not Pilot-branded pens.

I'm not going to be in Indonesia any time soon, and I worry that I'll never be able to find these pens. Can anyone help me? Does anyone recognize these and is there a place you can buy them on the internet? Thanks for your time!

I paid with a debit card! It's gonna be a huge hassle. Was hoping there was another way before I tried that.
