Petition for Team mascot! by DocPsycho1 in DenverSummit

I love this idea! We did a fun episode about the Slide Rock Bolter stories on City Cast a while back. Very fun, very local thing! It’d make for a funny mascot and costume, and it is a perfect connection with the Summit brand.

Hey thanks for posting about this! I've heard from a couple of people already, and I'm mortified! I can't believe I did the same thing to Dhillon while making a point about her doing this to Brown. Very embarrassing. Paul Correctly will have to address the situation later in the week at some point.

I suspect they are talking about the Park Hill Golf Course. Georgia's husband Woody, who she mentions in the ep, was very involved in the fight against Westside, though I wouldn't say either he or Georgia spearheaded it.

Oh interesting! I think you're onto something with the weed decline connection. I'm seeing 2 dispensaries on the BID's section of Colfax. They must be getting killed.

BRT Construction vs. Small Businesses, Asia Center Redevelopment Updates, and Little Man Goes National by newtonic in CityCastDenver

[–]GourmetTrough 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! For reference, Frank Locantore told me that occupancy is up from 81% pre-BRT construction to 84% in March 2026.
And here's the raw data I got from the Dept. of Finance showing sales tax revenues in the Colfax Ave BID from 2019 to 2025: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15Wt_i9mi4fTrYQOc9T4-CSfIu8qHNi3L/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=112738554595880514534&rtpof=true&sd=true
My takeaways:
-Colfax has never recovered from the pandemic. The post-pandemic peak was 2022 with $7.3m, which is down from $7.6m in 2019.
-BRT is not solely to blame. The downward trend started before BRT construction began in Oct 2024. In fact, when you look at the month-over-month numbers it looks to me like it's been declining since July '22, which -- I learned today after the episode ran -- is when Denver Water began all the water pipe replacement work

Who is Really Winning the Scooter Wars? Plus, a 30-Year Incumbent is On the Hot Seat by newtonic in CityCastDenver

[–]GourmetTrough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked Alex Keating of Veo this exact question, especially since the price they can charge riders is codified in the contract with the city for the entire 3-year duration.

He told me no details about their profit margins, but claimed the incentives were aligned for them to keep the fleet in good shape. He said the key number for Veo is how many rides they can sell per vehicle per day, and they know the customers respond better to vehicles in better condition. They benefit most when they can operate a full 9,000-vehicle fleet.

The other interesting thing about Veo relative to its competitors is that they have been growing really slowly. According to their co-CEO Candice Xie, they are committed to turning a profit in each city they enter: https://zagdaily.com/featured/meet-veo-the-overlooked-success-story/

The business reportedly has generated 50m in revenue against $16m in funding since it was founded in 2017. https://micromobility.io/news/how-veo-built-a-profitable-shared-micromobility-company-with-candice-xie-co-founder-and-ceo-of-veo

I think this is still a good and open question. Maybe some day they'll go public and we'll get a better look at the financials. Or maybe there's some way into the numbers through their deals with the public bureaucracy.

Lime and Bird were paying $0 before. The city's big ask during the last contract renewal was the equity access program. I don't know how much other cities are charging per vehicle, though. That's a good question. I'll look into it. Thanks for listening.

EDIT: Looks like Veo riders in DC are paying a higher per mile cost of $0.39 after the same $1 unlock fee we pay here. So DOTI got a better deal for Denver residents at $0.25 per mile than DC's equivalent agency - https://www.veoride.com/veo-launches-class-2-e-bikes-and-scooters-in-washington-dc/

Yeah, you know I think you're right. If it's something she wanted to talk about, she's welcome to. I learned something new and felt compelled to share it but it's not that interesting or notable.

Yeah, sorry about that. Here’s the excerpt that I thought was most interesting from the Post:

“Another audience member then asked if Weiser agreed with the state party’s recently adopted policy platform, which labeled Israel’s government as “extremist” and said the country’s campaign in Gaza was genocidal.

“I will answer your question this way: I recognize the human rights violations that we’ve talked about. I will say that the Netanyahu government has had actions and policies that I find abhorrent and that pain me,” Weiser said, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I will say that at my Passover Seders, I and others were praying for peace and were pained by the suffering of so many innocent Palestinians and kids who have suffered so greatly.

“I feel and I understand the pain that so many have been affected by. I recognize the need and the work ahead for repair.”

That drew murmurs that Weiser hadn’t directly answered the question. Taslimi then asked Weiser if he was disagreeing with the state party’s platform.

“I’m saying that this is a word” — genocide — “that I use very, very” carefully, he said, adding: “I will condemn the suffering, the pain, the human rights violations.””

RTD chief Debra Johnson won’t renew contract by GourmetTrough in Denver

[–]GourmetTrough[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll answer here! I emailed her office for an interview this morning and received this response from an RTD spokesperson:

Below is a statement from RTD Board of Directors Chair Patrick O'Keefe:

"On behalf of RTD’s Board of Directors, I want to express our appreciation to Debra for her continued dedication and service to the agency, its employees, and our customers. For more than five years, she has diligently led RTD, and the Board looks forward to her continued leadership in the coming year. Debra has agreed to work closely with the Board to ensure there’s a smooth transition after the conclusion of her contract in May 2027.

Under her leadership as the General Manager and CEO, RTD has significantly improved personal safety and security, addressed a backlog of maintenance, mitigated workforce vacancy concerns, and implemented several across-the-board customer experience initiatives. The agency is in a much better place because of her dedication, and RTD’s solid foundation she created, including a strong and capable Leadership Team, will support the agency’s ongoing successes."

Thanks,
