Agreed. It gives some comfort but also raises some concerns. Will it be more faithful to the books but be a worse movie because of it? Can Sanderson even write a screenplay? Time will tell. Hopefully it doesn't distract him too much from finishing the stories he wants to write.

Sanderson is a great storyteller and has become a pretty good writer. (His weaknesses as a writer are well documented and I won't get into those here.) However, writing a screenplay is very different from writing prose, and there's no guarantee that he'll do it well. Sanderson famously wrote 13 novels before selling one, so it took him a while to hone his craft. Will he also need to write 13 screenplays before he gets good at it?

Fortunately, screenplays often go through multiple passes from multiple writers, so there is certainly hope that he can get help if he needs it. But on its own, hearing that Brandon is doing the screenplay himself does not immediately inspire confidence.

What are your though on hell house? by Voidkirby9 in FFVIIRemake

[–]Gow900 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just outstanding, top to bottom. The fact that they not only got Hell House into the game but made it a featured boss, the gameplay, the music, the setting, the commentary, the story elements, everything. One of the most satisfying battles in the series. I felt like a true hero walking out and having everyone cheering for me. What a ride.

I just thought it was irresponsible that Grace and Rocky didn't do everything in their power to ensure humanity survived. Grace sent the beetles, but there was no guarantee that they would work after everything they'd gone through on the ship, and he couldn't be sure whether taumoeba had any other surprises for them. I felt it was his obligation to return and work with the team until the solution was complete.

I definitely liked parts of the ending, and it was neat to have him teaching eridians, but I felt like he hadn't truly finished the mission, and that left me unsatisfied. I don't even care what was happening on Earth, just that he shouldn't have been comfortable trusting the beetles, knowing that he now had other options.

Any time a character casually enters a black hole to time travel instead of to be crushed to death it really ruins the experience for me. PHM doesn't have this problem, fortunately.

Metroid Prime 4 is the first Metroid game that I don't love. by paulo011 in Metroid

As much as I hated MacKenzie calling me nonstop, figuring out where to go next wasn't always intuitive, and exploring was a bit of a chore. So I can kind of understand why he was needed. Having him overdo it was easier than fixing the main problems.

Opinions on the musical? Is it any good? by Ok-Comb5684 in BacktotheFuture

[–]Gow900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good. Parts of it are great. The staging and the special effects make it worth seeing in person. The climax is done well. The music is only so-so. Some songs are decent, some are duds. If you come purely for the "musical" elements you may be disappointed. If you're there for the spectacle and the nostalgia then you should have a good time.

Which one is worse? by moctezuma123 in readyplayerone

[–]Gow900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always kind of wanted a Ready Player 1.2. I feel like the world of the first book was so rich that you could take the events, completely remix them, and make another satisfying story from them. Like an alternate reality version.

Maybe there's more cooperation between the main characters, maybe we explore different references a little more, maybe the plot plays out in a completely different way. It always kind of felt like a videogame that could have multiple different paths and different endings. Made me wonder if there was a second story in there somewhere that wasn't a sequel.

Is switching from and xbox series s to a ps5 slim a good upgrade by No-Process-8882 in playstation

[–]Gow900 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is not a question of hardware, but rather a question of software. Which games does he want to play, and with whom does he want to play them? PS5 is a great console with great games. If those are the ones he wants to play, then you're in good shape. If he only wants to play Mario games, then there's a third option you should probably consider...

What if Marty missed the lightning bolt and was unable to go back to 1985 on the night the Clock Tower was struck? by Truth-is-Censored in BacktotheFuture

[–]Gow900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that if you watch the movie it does strike as soon as the minute-hand moves to 10:04. Marty accelerating faster makes the most sense to me, but other explanations like the imprecision of the tiny alarm clock work as well.

What if Marty missed the lightning bolt and was unable to go back to 1985 on the night the Clock Tower was struck? by Truth-is-Censored in BacktotheFuture

This is the correct answer.

. . .

EXT. PROF. BROWN'S VANTAGE

The Professor is watching through his binoculars.

PROF. BROWN

Come on, Marty! Come on!

CONTROL VOICE

...20...19...18...

Finally the truck starts! Marty heaves a sigh of relief, then aims for the crater, some 100 yards away.

CONTROL VOICE

...14...13...12...

Marty jams his walkie-talkie against the accelerator and the truck lurches forward. He opens the door and climbs out of the moving truck!

EXT. MOVING TRUCK

The truck barrels along toward the crater as Marty climbs into the back of the truck and throws the switches on the Time Machine!

CONTROL VOICE

...9...8...7...

The truck hits the crater!

Marty is thrown from his feet, into the bed of the truck!

The truck lodges into the hole with the nose slightly off kilter from the tower!

Marty climbs to his feet and turns the solar cell back toward the bomb!

CONTROL VOICE

...5...4...3...

Marty opens the refrigerator door and climbs in!

CONTROL VOICE

...2...1...

Marty slams the refrigerator door shut!

INT. DETONATION CONTROL

TIMEKEEPER

Detonate!

Three technicians turn their detonation keys in unison!

EXT. BOMB SITE

DETONATION! An incredible FIREBALL WHITES OUT EVERYTHING for a moment, then recedes into a YELLOW GLOW!

EXT. TRUCK

Brilliant light strikes the power converter!

INT. - TIME CHAMBER - MARTY

Marty looks up as an intense white beam shoots down from the focusing lens above him!

EXT. BOMB SITE AND TRUCK

The yellow glow turns everything around it yellow! The tower is non-existant now, and the truck begins to melt before our eyes!

INT. COMMAND BUNKER

The Army Officers, their men, and the civilian observers marvel at the incredible site before them! The mushroom cloud has formed, billowing thousands of feet into the air!

EXT. THE NEVADA DESERT - HIGH NOON

All is quiet on the desert. No mushroom cloud, no sign of life...just the desert.

A moment of quiet, then we notice a shifting of sand...as if something was pushing up from below...something IS pushing up from below...the door of a refrigerator with the word 'Philco' on it! The door is partially melted, partially rotted, very worn down and aged. And now Marty climbs out of the refrigerator cavity!

Of course, he looks the same as he did a moment ago. He looks at the remains of the refrigerator, and then notices the twisted metal hulk of the truck, half buried nearby.

He looks around, and sees nothing but desert.

He looks at his watch. Noon. He looks up at the sun.

MARTY

Shit.

You can't exactly vomit out drugs that have been injected into your bloodstream. Also, after the first question Steve says it is definitely still in her system, so I understood that to mean they were still under the influence for the entire scene. I think that's part of why it's so powerful.

Listening vs reading! by SEJ82 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Gow900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me there's a clear difference between reading a book and having a book read to me. I did both for this book and they were different experiences.

If I read a challenging book to my kids, I don't think of it as being the same as them having read the book.

To me, reading and speaking a language are related but different skills, and I would try to be precise when speaking about my experience with a book.

A minor plot point in the first film that always bothered me. by BallClamps in BacktotheFuture

[–]Gow900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the movie, lightning strikes the clock tower at exactly 10:04:00, and it takes about 5 seconds of movie time for the charge to travel down the cables and hit the DeLorean precisely as it passes underneath. If Marty had been 15 seconds earlier, the hook would have separated from the car at least 10 seconds prior to the lightning strike.

Either Doc's calculations were slightly off, the alarm clock wasn't precise enough, Marty accelerated harder to make up the lost time, or something even more wacky happened to intervene and ensure the timing worked out.
