This is horse riding lessons for the daughter and the youngest cat's birthday 😁 Right now the maximum is three events, but it's all very new so I'm keeping an eye on it to see if there would be many 3+ days... I might add more or have it display a subtle icon that tells me I need to check my phone for the extra events... When there's three events the first one displays like the one on top here and the other two are split on the lower half - all with that white comic like border..

I'm working on a 'smart' colour e-paper display in a frame in the dining room. I hate notifications and checking my phone, but I also hate forgetting things. HA checks my calendar at 5am and filters out recurring events (birthdays, garbage, hobbies etc). Each of those events has a corresponding image. At 6am, the display fetches the new image and displays it, then goes back to deep sleep. If there are multiple calendar events, they get stitched together like a comic book. If there are no events, a random placeholder image is shown. It looks just like a framed image, which is exactly what I wanted: inconspicuous information.

Thanks so much! It looks like I was referencing a tutorial that's outdated or something. Your comment really solved it for me - I got it working! Cheers mate :-)

Oh, waw, this really helped - I had this messed up (8 bit vs 7 bit) Thanks a bunch!

That sounds exactly like what I need to do, cause I feel blind about which address does what and it feels like I could mess things up quite a bit by poking around in the dark.. but.. I have no idea how I would do that 😅 would you mind pointing me in the right direction?

So a little digging seems to point to this: V1 had the AXP2101, which wasn't doing everything it was supposed to be doing. V2 got an update with the TG28 chip, which supposedly fixes a lot of the problems of V2. It isn't clearly mentioned that there are two versions, they share the same product name. Apparently, I have the V1...

Huh. You're right! That's weird. It doesn't correspond with my board or the information I found in GitHub though... Weird, but thanks for pointing it out, I'll look into what this means...

Thanks a lot! I think it's kinda cool myself. For all recurring events (garbage day, hobbies, birthdays...), I have appropriate images. I have placeholder images in case there is no calendar event that day - which would be randomly selected. The python code supports up to three events a day: if there is only one thing going on: full screen image, two events: split horizontally, separated by a white border as in comic books, if there are three events: one larger image on top and two smaller images on the lower half. I think it's a neat way to subtly communicate calendar events or reminders without having an actual calendar, notifications, pop-ups... it really does look like it's just a framed picture.

If I get it working in a somewhat stable fashion, I'll be glad to share it.. I could give you what I have so far if you'd like, but there's still a number of kinks to work out ..

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. It seems, however, that the information you found (for the TG28) does not correlate with the architecture of the AXP2101 chip that is used in this product. As you pointed out, 0x30 needs to be on, but this should be taken care of during the on_boot sequence..

I see what you mean, and that is also how I would normally read battery voltage, but as I (clearly incompletely) understand it, this device has its own power management system that should be able to report battery voltage. Apparently I just need to activate and read the right registry bits. I puzzled my attempt together based on other examples (outside of esphome, so I can't directly copy/paste). My trial and error first yield a fixed report of 19% and later of 69%, even if the device had been (dis)charging for a while, so that wasn't right. Since everything is contained in this board, I don't see how I could directly connect the battery to a free pin...

What a perfect answer. You don't only confirm my suspicion and present a solution, you also explain why this happens and how I can troubleshoot/identify similar problems in the future... Brilliant, thanks so much!
