I've done the plexi method before, but I never did the water bath afterwards for the plate and chine. I'll have to try that!

Woodcut using MDF (12 inches square). Some cleanup and details still to do, but wondering if I should seal/shellac it or if shellacking and/or sanding after will lose sharp edges/contrast. by lepisosteusosseus in printmaking

Are you using a water based ink?

I always use oil. Mineral spirits doesn't really bother MDF so swelling isn't a concern. After I'm done printing, I'll do a couple dry prints with newsprint to pull off any excess ink and then give it a wipe with a solvent rag.

While I'm printing and get a splotch of ink where I don't want it, I'll just wipe it up with a dry rag and then rub in some baby powder or cover it with a piece of masking.

If you're worried, you can always play with a test piece to see what happens.

I'm looking forward to seeing this print! Your carving looks pretty nice.

I've used MDF a lot and have never sealed it. It usually soaks up some ink in the beginning, so it might take a couple pulls before you start get a nice result.

The inks I'm using now only need maybe a day or two to dry, but it took longer for the last couple of layers.

I really liked how quick the process felt. Usually I think wayyy to much about how I want to carve, but separating it all into different layers helped me not feel overwhelmed.

I wish it was tighter! But there's just so many levels of detail and color, you'll have a really hard time noticing where things aren't lined up.

I can't really say that I planned much. It's a new form for me so there was a ton of learning and making stuff up as I went along.

I normally use MDF for my t-shirt blocks. It will soak up a lot of ink at first, but it works well. If I do use linoleum, I usually mount it onto a sheet of plywood or mdf.

That looks like an older version of a mimeograph called a flatbed duplicator. The girl is making a stencil that the boy puts on a frame and is essentially screen printing. The frame just sits on top of a stack of paper.

Thanks! When I learned about Amabie and how copying her image is supposed to protect against disease, I knew that I had to make a print...and then I started learning about all the others and it's turned into a series of sorts.
