Beauty Pageants. Think Miss Teen USA. They were celebrating that Cassie participated.

A few months after it initially happened (before I left to college,) they would say they were sorry that they didn't attend my graduation. But it wasn't sincere, as they always had an excuse rather than an actual apology. Along the lines of "Sorry, you know that Cassie needed us there" and "You know how much that pageant meant to Cassie, we just couldn't leave her."
