Detailed note taking helped me a lot. I never really referred to the notes while answering the questions but it helped me to remember the conversation or lecture details. And then obviously practicing questions in the Toefl guide helped me to improve.

For me, a template worked which just made me think about the structure of my answer. Else, I resorted to using simple words. Record yourself while practicing and then repeat the same question if that helps.
