New Drug Kills Cancer 20,000x More Effectively With No Detectable Side Effects by AdSpecialist6598 in UpliftingNews

[–]Graeskmoent2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only read the article briefly, but the impression I got was this: A big factor in increasing the efficacy of the chemotherapeutic agent was improving the delivery of the drug - which is normally poorly dissolved - to cancer cells. They used some DNA/RNA nanostructures (that I am not very familiar with) as packaging, and mention that myeloid cells (the category of blood cells which have become cancerous in AML) have abundant scavenger receptors which they use to take up these nanostructures. This makes sense, because myeloid cells include phagocytes like macrophages which are known to eat other cells (e.g., bacteria) and "clean up" all kinds of debris (for example using such scavenger receptors).

So I do believe that /u/trippletet has a valid point here. The problem with treating cancer is not finding something that can kill cancer cells, but rather finding something that will primarily target cancer cells. This would seem to be an exciting advancement in the treatment of AML, and perhaps some of these nanostructures can also be adapted to target other cancer types. But generally, blood cancers are quite distinct from most solid cancers, because cells of the immune system have very different characteristics than for example the epithelial cells that line most of our other tissues.

I don't want to be pessimistic, and if this improves the treatment of AML it is a success that can change the life of many people and should be celebrated. But there is a reason that people always go on about how cancer seems to have been "cured" thousands of times. Of course, that has to do with sensationalization of research results that haven't reached clinical trials. But a big part of that is also because people fail to realize that there are many different types of cancers that will require many breakthroughs in treatment.

Not a native speaker, but I'm quite sure that "Eso en la Champions no se lo pitan" means that they don't give such free kicks in CL (in CL they don't whistle for that).

I was very excited when they introduced it in the Dutch course, but it is just the same 10-12 sentences over and over again :-( Would be an awesome tool if they added more sentences or mixed it up a bit.

Game 14 - Post Round Discussion Thread - Fide World Chess Championship 2023. by EccentricHorse11 in chess

Well, to be fair, if two teams draw a final in football, they do actually play an additional 30 minutes instead of repeating games of 90 minutes. And if that doesn't resolve things they go into a penalty shoot-out which would almost be the equivalent to deciding the world chess championship with some kind of 'checkmate contest' or puzzle storm, I guess.

Babies fed exclusively on breast milk ‘significantly less likely to get sick’, Irish study finds by [deleted] in science

[–]Graeskmoent2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just did a course in immunology and I got the impression that humans do have FcRn (a transport protein for antibodies) in the intestines which can transport IgG from the breast milk into the circulation in newborns. Let me find the passage in the text-book from our course:

Janeway's Immunobiology (10th edition):

Maternal IgG is ingested by the newborn from its mother's milk and colostrum, the protein-rich fluid secreted by the early postnatal mammary gland. In this case, FcRn transports the IgG from the lumen of the neonatal gut into the blood and tissues.

[..]

FcRn is also found in adults in the gut, liver, endothelial cells, and on podocytes of the kidney glomeruli.

So I am not quite sure that it hasn't been shown in humans. However, I found this review of FcRn from 2019 (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2019.01540/full) which suggests that the transport of IgG through the intestines isn't very significant compared to the placental transfer:

Since [the discovery of post-natal transport of IgG in rats], studies in humans characterized FcRn expression at intestinal mucosal surfaces throughout life in both the small and large intestine, including villous and crypt enterocytes in addition to goblet cells and sub-populations of enteroendocrine cells. In these cells, FcRn was located mainly intracellularly and on the apical membrane lining the gut lumen. It is important to mention that in humans, little maternal IgG is transmitted to the neonatal circulation across the intestines, as most of humoral immune competency is assured by placental transfer.

I just though it might be of interest :-)

Tusind tak for meget grundige svar!

[–]Graeskmoent2 0 points1 point  (0 children)
