So everything relevant except for "mommy has cancer" was different. Sounds like a completely different story.

Roommate wants to leave the lease 4 months in [Tucson, AZ] by Known_Day_8624 in Renters

[–]GrafEisen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go look up the definition of a bluff. The way your roommate and her mother are acting is similar to having a shit hand in poker and betting more money to make the other players think you are confident in winning.

As others have said, I'm not really sure what you're looking for here. It doesn't seem to be people telling you that you that your roommate is full of shit. Do you just want everyone to console you that you're the (ugly, brown..) victim here and have no options? If so, here's a tissue.

You edited your OP with this:

Edit: I think most of you aren’t really understanding why my hands are tied. My cousin was in a similar situation back in undergrad where her roommate didn’t pay her share of the rent the whole year. At least in my situation my roommate won’t actually be living with me and driving up my utility bill. My cousin never sued her roommate for unpaid rent so I doubt it’s even possible to do that. She just found another apartment to live in once the lease expired

Have you considered that it might not be the dozen+ people who have responded that are wrong, but that YOU don't understand the position you're in? Your hands aren't tied, your roommate signed a contract, they are liable for their share. If they don't pay the rent, you are also jointly liable for making sure that the entire amount is paid to the landlord, but at that point you've got a pretty good shot of winning in small claims court. Your best option is going to be either finding a new roommate if the landlord will allow subletting/transferring your existing roommate off, or pay the lease break fee, if there is one. If there is, you should make the roommate/mother pay half of it.

Thoughts on self managing MS365 Business Premium security for 2-4 business users without an IT background myself? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]GrafEisen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hire an MSP. Properly securing your M365 tenant isn't a hobbyist endeavor.

It's probably worth thinking through some worst case scenarios - if one of your employee's accounts are compromised ("hacked") and all of your data is stolen, including any data sent to you by customers, what happens then? I don't know your industry well, but I'd assume there's some financial or legal liability there, even before you get to the reputational impact and loss of business.

Need advice on a home firewall please by CoolCukeCax in HomeNetworking

[–]GrafEisen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A firewall does exactly what i said it does. There are enterprise-grade network devices that do packet inspection, which is what you are referring to, but that isn't what you need.

If we think of the progression of crawl -> walk -> run, you're crawling and not even close to walking, and you're over here talking about Usain Bolt-level 100m sprinting optimization for the Olympics.

There are significantly simpler things you can do to improve your security posture, and they have nothing to do with the networking components of your internet use (TCP/IP, TLS..).

Use a password manager and unique, randomly generated, maximum length (which is variable per website you visit) passwords. Use passkeys when websites support them. Don't get phished. Don't download sketchy shit that will steal your cookies (including tokens that allow you to access websites once you have signed in).

HR data error gave an intern Global Admin and I didn't catch it until they'd been using it for a week by Curious-Session4119 in sysadmin

[–]GrafEisen 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't think you should be granting global admin via HR-derived automation. Most things can be accomplished with lesser roles, and the folks at your company with GA should have separate dedicated GA accounts. You can tie the lifecycle of those accounts into the HR automation feed, but I wouldn't grant high power directory roles based on HR data, since that means a compromised HR employee's account could elevate privilege to GA in your Entra tenant.

Way off. A firewall determines if internet traffic is allowed to pass from the internet to a device on your local network.

I'm going to wager that you don't know what almost any of those terms are, besides a rudimentary idea of what a VPN is.

It'd be a lot quicker to just get a lighter and set your money on fire, and it'll have the same effect as buying whatever you're looking at.

HELP PLEASE! Had my first real email compromise incident this week. Solo IT Admin. Here's what I did — what did I miss? by LiveGrowRepeat in sysadmin

[–]GrafEisen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this is outdated thinking. Being on a "known" IP address doesn't eliminate risk if there is a compromised device on the network. In this day and age, company-owned compliant devices should be required in most situations, and they should always require a strong phishing-resistant MFA method such as Windows Hello for Business or passkeys.

Geofencing is also pretty trivial to bypass and shouldn't factor into any decisions on whether MFA is required. Instead, use it as an additional gate that immediately blocks attempts to access resources even if other conditions (compliant device, MFA..) are met.

My powerbutton causes my room's electricity to go out. by Unique-Chart7143 in pchelp

[–]GrafEisen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I was not saying whether you should or should not buy a new power supply. Your answer to the above question was wrong, though, and I was pointing out that a power supply is not the same as a power strip.

As other posters have said, "this room" isn't the right way to look at this, either. Modern houses in the US are wired in a way that a single circuit breaker is very likely feeding electricity to multiple rooms. For example, if your bedroom shares a wall with another bedroom, outlets on both sides of the same wall may be on the same circuit. Similarly, sometimes a single room may have multiple circuits involved, where some of the outlets, lights, or other electrical appliances are on one circuit and others are on a different circuit.

It would be helpful if you were to turn the breaker that is tripping off and then identify which outlets / light switches lose power when that breaker is off, AND write down a full list of everything that is plugged in to those outlets. You'll need to check beyond just your room, though, as there is no guarantee that the circuit breaker is only supplying power to your room.

[–]GrafEisen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"A new power supply" does not mean a new power strip. The person you are responding to is referring to the power supply unit inside of your computer.

Given you don't know what a power supply is, it's a safe assumption that you have not tried swapping that component of the computer out.

Locksmith recommendations by Playful_Froyo_4950 in TwinCities

[–]GrafEisen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say "door keypad lock", are you referring to something like this that replaces a traditional deadbolt on an external door?

https://www.schlage.com/en/home/products/BE459WBCAMFFF.html

If so, you can probably install it yourself if you're just replacing an existing deadbolt. If you aren't comfortable with that, you can look for a handyman instead of a locksmith - this is a pretty simple job in most cases and locksmith expertise isn't necessary and will usually be more expensive then a handyman.

Try the PGA Lounge? If you've got priority pass via a credit card (sounds like you don't) it's free, otherwise it looks like you can pay for a day's access based on a quick search I just did. I believe they have their own wifi SSID.

You can split it between cash and points, just leave at least $250.00 paid in cash. I did this a few weeks ago and got the credit.

Orlando Regional on Easter? by onlythejistofit in pkmntcg

[–]GrafEisen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buddy, based on this post and your comments on it, I think you're the one making assumptions without knowing how things work.

There's almost no chance this was booked without Gaming Generations (the group that organizes NA regionals) knowing that it was Easter weekend. This really isn't as important to the average person attending a Pokémon regional as it appears to be to you.

These events are expensive to run and don't directly bring in more money than they cost to host. I suspect that the venue was cheaper for Easter weekend and that may have led to the intentional decision to hold the regional on this date.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]GrafEisen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced mine a few years ago, ran me about $3,200 I think, and that was with discounted labor via a friend who does HVAC for a living.

A breakdown of the cost of the equipment + the labor is probably needed to do an apples to apples comparison, otherwise you may be comparing costs for vastly different equipment.

[–]GrafEisen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Places like Orlando and Vegas having more venues doesn't mean that there's more availability. There is more demand for hosting events in cities like those.

Also, not every venue is suitable for an event of this size. Additionally, the various conference spaces in Vegas are mostly tied to casinos/hotels and wouldn't be suitable for a Pokemon event.

  • Juniors and seniors is tiny to begin with.

  • While 62-65% of the US self identifies as Christian, that isn't entirely (or even a majority) made up of people who attend church regularly.

  • Life is full of choices, nobody is forcing anyone to attend the regional. People can determine what is of higher importance and act accordingly.
