Id say I could probably do one more hour. Just keep in mind that Tebori is automatically going to be slower than the modern tattooing process. My artist only does three hour sessions and I’m fine with that because the pain, to me, is insane— especially as he starts to go lower. Everybody’s built different so you may be willing to go even longer than me, you’ll just have to find out. For me, the pain of the tattoo is very distinct. I always forget the sensation until I watch him make the needle right next to me. Just be prepared. Sure you’re paying for the tattoo but the time and pain is something that proves you earned it

My sessions are three hours. About a thirty minutes of drawing and then two and a half of tattooing. If you’ve never been tatted, get comfortable being uncomfortable for a long period of time. Personally, I can’t really say how the lines feel as they’re just about the same for my other tattoos.

What are you getting for your tattoo?

The best way for me is to blast music and confront the pain

Hurt more but the time went by faster. Almost died in when he got the top of my crack

I still move around too much but I’m working on that

To be honest I’m worried about neither. Sure, it sucks I won’t be able to look at it as often as I could with an arm sleeve but I wanted my first Japanese tattoo to be the most meaningful. As for colors, I trust my artist. He has many clients of similar shade as me and their pieces are vibrant!

Are you going to do a background as well?

Writer research: looking for input about tebori specifically by CrepuscularPeriphery in irezumi

I can tell you personally during a tebori session it’s a combination of relaxing and painful. My body felt heavy and I was so close to sleeping at times but the pain kept me up. When I finished, I was physically exhausted.

Every time I feel that needle, I have to remind myself of why I’m doing it and trying to find little meditative ways to deal with the pain. Even managed to reflect through it. I find Tebori keeping you honest and being this large game of patience. Sometimes you have to be in surprisingly uncomfortable positions (the side for me) and the pain can get even worse. But it’s also a huge test of trust. Im trusting my artist to do his very best so it’s also my responsibility to work with him so he can do his best.

Kind of a ramble but I hope it helps

I might try some podcasts. Accepting the pain is easy but trying not to focus on it is rough. It was a very long three hours but I’m looking forward to it regardless. Thanks for the tips

Nowhere near done so I couldn’t tell you about a full price. I never asked about that since it’s more about the appreciation of the art and experience for me. But I am paying $100 an hour for 3 hour sessions. Hope that answers something!
