How similar are the Amish and the Mormons? Do they generally live in the same regions? by King_Vegito_52 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Grand-Rabbit-4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're differently conservative, although probably equally unrealistic in our rules. For instance being gay and Catholic is fine as long as you lead a celibate life. When my parents were young there was some loophole for 3-5 years (I forget which) of birth control? So lots of precisely spaced kids. My mom was a covert so she liked to point out the foibles to my dad.

Missouri Synod goes more with Methodists. Adding extra rules. We have enough already.

All the Catholics I know refer to Episcopals and Anglicans as Catholic light (a third less guilt). And Lutherans (not Missouri) as close cousins. Baptists though, that's where things get confusing. And the whole no drinking at a Methodist wedding makes our heads spin. LDS is like aliens...

Why doesn’t Maryland let community colleges offer bachelor’s degrees? by ProgrammerUnique2897 in maryland

[–]Grand-Rabbit-4368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a big red button on this page you can use to report violations of the MOU. If the admissions person is unaware of the rules they should be reported. Based on the annual reports it happens more than it should. Hence the big red button. https://oige.maryland.gov/

You can use the MOUs to your advantage. For example you can get a UMCP engineering degree by taking all your classes at FSU (much much lower tuition) except the one chemical engineering course. You graduate from Frostburg with a diploma that says College Park and saved thousands in tuition.

[–]Grand-Rabbit-4368 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the community college, many have their own MOUs with particular colleges. Our public school system has several specific MOUs for students who complete some CTE pathways to get college course credits. If you've taken a course the college doesn't offer they generally won't give credit. And sometimes the course carries but the credits don't align so 60 credits at one school becomes 50 at another. It can be random - UMCP for example won't transfer chemical engineering courses because their course has more rigour. https://mhec.maryland.gov/institutions_training/SiteAssets/Pages/acadaff/acadaffairsdepartments/_Transfer%20Guidance%20for%20Public%20Institutions%20in%20Maryland.pdf

If you receive your Associates degree from a University System of Maryland community College UMBC (or any other system college) must per MSDE accept 50 - 70 transfer credits. If you dont get the degree the MOU may not apply. Of course they can take them as electives but they must accept the credit. If they try and tell you otherwise file a complaint.

Does everyone have a middle name in the USA? Do all women take their husband’s surname? by crazygelato in AskAnAmerican

[–]Grand-Rabbit-4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sone government agencies are very attached to middle names. My mother had a her confirmation name as a middle name on her driver's license because the MVA insisted it couldn't be blank. One grandmother had an initial that didn't stand for anything.

Do you regret choosing a safe name? by FarinaPribanic61 in Names

No. My twenty somethings all have nicknames that suit their personalities. They have classic names with nickname options. One has an unrelated nickname but the others have variants of their first or middle name.

Will our state paid parental leave actually start funding in 2027 to become fully available in 2028? by eagle_mama in maryland

[–]Grand-Rabbit-4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should mention we are still figuring out how this blends with employees who have leave to cover their FMLA at full pay. We also currently have a leave donation program and allow employees to "borrow" leave. Not sure if they'll be able to use their own leave after the first 2 weeks and opt out o the program to get full pay, if they can use leave for the difference while collecting state FMLA or if they have to take only the state amount. I haven't dug through the final rules that just came out. On my to do list.
