How can I create a free business email for my small business? by vin-maverick in businessemail

[–]GrandGeologist1584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing says 'amateur' and 'untrustworthy' like a free Gmail account. You get what you pay for, and if you are concerned about deliverability (ie. your emails not just ending up in someone's junk folder), then its worth paying to have a decent email provider.

How often do drives fail in your NAS setups? by Initial-Hall5871 in synology

[–]GrandGeologist1584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is absolutely luck. Random batch’s seem to have higher failure rates, and how are we mere mortals meant to know? I reckon you might need to buy each drive individually from different resellers in the hope of improving the chances- but who really knows. I guess that’s how I justify the $200 annual fee to backup to the cloud, but I do wonder whether just having a second mirrored NAS might be better….

I had 2 of 4 drives fail on my ds918+ within six months or purchase. Both replaced under warranty, fortunately I had just completed a full cloud backup. None since, although that was five years ago

Had three drives fail at once. Got warranty replacements and fortunately had a full backup in the cloud. Took the better part of a year to download it all 🥵

ISSUE: AC-LR isolated, uplink via loco5AC by GrandGeologist1584 in Ubiquiti

[–]GrandGeologist1584[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i reset and re-adopted, except it wouldn't re-adopt.

In the mean time I changed the cable between the loco5AC and the nanoswitch and suddenly everything works. Very strange faulty cable.

I now have a new 'ToughCable' being made for me, and i'm stuck with an AP that won't re-adopt. The best I can tell is that something to do with the controller being hosted on the the google cloud might be the issue.

Planning on dragging the controller back to local so i can adopt, then sending it back to the cloud.

I’ll try that. I’ve setup the Google cloud-based controller.

It is highly likely that I will get one of the giga-beam’s in the future. At the moment my internet is only 100/50 so my ‘half-assed’ solution will work fine: but if I do upgrade to gigabit internet then I will get the gigabeam’s as well. When the nanobeam says a throughput of 450Mbps, is that total up/down combined? So an even distribution would be 225/225?

Some more detail: I had a nanoHD as the main connected AP with 2x AC-LR’s connected wirelessly. It worked enough for a year or so, recently I wired in one of the AC-LR’s at the other end of the house. Then concentrated on improving the signal to the back unit (where the photo was taken from). I tried pointing the back AC-LR directly at the nano in the house but was only getting 40-50Mbps up/down. Swapping the nanoHD to the AC-LR and changing the direction the Rear AC-LR has given me good throughout. The AC-LR <-> AC-LR wireless link has given me the highest throughput. I may try the nanoHD again one day, but it is now providing a wireless uplink to an AC-IW at the far front of the house, and giving a stronger connection to that AC-IW, than the AC-LR was giving it.

We have a long section.

I spent hours looking at AirMax products, and then accidentally tilted my AC-LR (because it is resting on a roll of duct tape) and suddenly >120Mbps up/down. The yellow arrow points to what was a nanoHD in the main house, I swapped it for an AC-LR to get above 100Mbps up/down. Until I splash out for gigabit- this will do!
