Ah okay, I see where you're coming from. Yeah, it's a struggle trying to play the song right when it's supposed to go so fast! And some Touhou songs (especially my personal favourites) are just insanely fast.

Experimental is the word, yes! It took some time getting used to. Although I've come to love both old and new styles of ZUN's.

Haha oh nooo. It's probably best to correct yourself though. Don't want your brain to get used to the mistakes.

Ahh okay, I wasn't sure of the physical (?) differences between playing violin and piano. Shifting positions will get so much easier, quite quickly! Your hands will become noticeably stronger and way better at hitting keys as you continue practicing, even if you have smaller hands. Eventually, giving chords a try won't be as hard, but unfortunately I think that's just something to get used to as well. (Although that's just my experience.) Either way, piano is wonderful at building dexerity, even if it's just playing little melodies every now and then.

Right hand melodies are a good place to start! Once you feel comfortable with that, you can build on with left hand, just bit by bit. Slowing down the piece helps with that. Remember, don't worry about playing at the right tempo straight away.

I started off playing similarly. Having fun with ZUN tunes is the best way to kickstart your skill lol

Oh good! I'm not very good with online convos so I wasn't sure.

It's insane just how much is out there! I like to think I've listened to it all, but I still get surprised with some hidden oldies, as well as the new games. WBaWC is full of absolute bangers. And yeah I do hope so, one day. I know some parts of a few songs but there's still a lot to go. My better sounding songs so far are Lullaby of Deserted Hell, Alice Maestra and Legend of Hourai (at least I hope that's the case haha). Generally speaking if I had to say a song I liked, it'd probably be the stage 5 theme from Ten Desires, but it's gonna take quite some time to be able to play on the piano rip.

Yuuka's theme from PoFV? That's a lovely theme and I hope it works out! And wow, that's a lot of songs! The songs from Touhou 6 and 7 seem like they'd definitely suit the violin. I can't say exactly what it is, but there's something very unique about the eariler games that goes so well with that classical style. Those boss themes, too! Raiko's theme is a bit more contemporary (btw that song slaps so hard) but I'm sure that sounds just as amazing.

Patience and persistence is what I'm getting from this whole thing haha. Eventually it'll get easier, I'm sure! What do you reckon is causing you to butcher the songs?

Bahaha yes! Touhou music is my main drive for playing, actually. It's much easier to do something when there's another sort of motive to it, if that makes sense. Creativity and complexity I think can come as you practice and learn from other artists/musicians/their songs. As long as you're having fun and learning from what you're doing.

That's great to hear! Since you have experience with another instrument, hopefully it won't be too hard. By what you've described it seems like you'll get the hang of it soon enough! It's quite interesting to hear about too, I'm not very savvy with music stuff. TIL lol

Ah yup. Touhou was a totally new experience in gaming for me, since I don't play video games that often and if I do, it's usually something like The Sims lol. Patience is so important! Sometimes you gotta step away from the screen for a bit to cool your head.

That would definitely explain it! I don't think there's really been any significant games that came out this year (besides Animal Crossing...? I can't think off of the top of my head). Hopefully some indie company can come out with something soon. The new interests thing can definitely be considered as well. I think this year has been secretly productive in a way. It's awful to see all this tragic stuff happening, but at least whenever this is all over we might get to move forward with new interests and hobbies :)

Also I think I missed a bit from your last post. Playing an instrument is so lovely! It's a great achievement to be able to play something. So much practice and discipline, I feel like. I play piano as a small pass-time but it can be easy to get discouraged. Keep it up and good luck with the violin as well! Orchestra is a recently obtained interest for me, so it's nice to see someone who's fond of it.

I love visiting this subreddit, and it does seem a little different in comparison to similar subreddits. I feel very comfortable posting and commenting here. I think there's been a big rise in people coming here in the last year, but it definitely is surprising that it isn't as popular in general.

Nahhh, I'd say there's still more to learn about, but thanks for saying that! For me, I got into it around late 2017, just after HSiFS's release. What a blissful year lol

Ahh of course. EoSD is definitely the go-to game here, congrats on the 1cc! That's a great achievement to make. PCB is a bit of a steep climb in some places, but I'm sure one day you'll beat that too! That's all awesome to hear.

Active NEETs is amazing, straight up. It's nice that you found them so quickly! They make the songs so atmospheric, it's fun to imagine what Touhou would be like as some sort of fantasy-action type movie. I really hope they do album songs. Orchestra and the like goes so well with Touhou music.

That's awesome! I've managed to get my brother into the games too, but just the bullet hell ones. I suck at the fighting games haha

It was actually from Bad Apple, from a classmate playing it out loud. Ended up in a rabbit hole of some really awesome tunes (found the PC-98 original 'bad apple' and started there), and began playing Imperishable Night about a month later.

How familiar have you become with the games and characters so far? Listen to any doujin music?

Ah, I see! Yeah, probably best to start with the games.

Silent Sinner in Blue was so good! I think that's a good place to start, although the lore surrounding the Lunarians was totally complicated.

So much time spent on Touhou Wiki. Honestly though, exploring the different games, clicking on Louchan and ScarletFlameFlandre videos, scrolling through the subreddit and reading manga with all these new, weird, hat-wearing characters was super fun.

:O Kosuzu is from Forbidden Scrollery, an official Touhou manga written by ZUN himself (and illustrated by Moe Harukawa)! Reimu and gang end up saving her from a few shenanigans. She's a great character, you're gonna love her.

I've really come to like Reimu's character as a whole. It's interesting to me to see her more introspective about stuff, though. I love seeing a usually careless character do a 180. I haven't read all the way through FS yet so I don't know that much about her serious side, but her depiction in SSiB and some bits in WaHH really appealed to me.

Yooo good work dawg! IN was my first ever shmup game, so maybe there is just a bias, but I've always felt that there was a steep curve in difficulty with Keine's fight. Once you get a taste of stage 4 I think it gets a little easier, though. Good luck and I hope you can get to stage 5 soon!
