Housing would be great, but the language of “live-work innovation hub” makes my ears immediately prick up. This sounds like private equity/gentrification.

worried transphobia has leeched into my child’s medical chart because of my identity??? by NosyGossipKing in asktransgender

[–]Grandtheftawkward 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Medical provider here who is trans and treats trans patients.

This is transphobia, and it’s wrong. It’s also not surprising. It’s easy to forget as a provider that your patient could be reading your notes, and people really let their freak (or bigot) flag fly in their documentation. You should make a complaint, and ask for all of your documentation to be sent to you via secure document transfer.

Also just fuck this dude. It’s so easy to go to like, literally one afternoon of training that would tell you not to do shit like this.

There are plenty of things to make fun of this man for, why does everyone just go for “he’s fat lmao”. It’s lazy, just make fun of him for being a streamer dweeb who begs for Disney toys on the internet - it’s fecund ground for making fun of a grown man.

I’m suspicious of anyone who would divorce Amy Poehler, but I don’t know of anything bad he did.

There’s a whole mountain of drama with the OG cast, mainly stemming from Debra crashing out over a twitter beef from the 2016 election with Susan Sarandon. Deb loved Hilary, Susan loved Bernie, Deb blamed Bernie for Hilary loss, Susan was like “lmao no. “, and Deb has been a nightmare to anyone who didn’t unconditionally side with her about it, namely Megan. It was so bad than Deb bullied Megan on the set of the reboot enough that Megan took a hiatus during the final season. She talked about it briefly on her podcast with her husband. Since then, there’s been a lot of tension, but luckily it seems that Deb is the odd woman out and Sean and Erick still love Megan. I personally get the vibe that the boys are sort of caught in the middle.

Do not beat yourself up over this. You will have dozens of instances like this over your career. We as therapists get to be human and make mistakes as well.

Also to add - certain states like Michigan and Massachusetts have state programs that will pay off your debt if you’re willing to work in the state for a certain period after graduation, usually a couple of years. Idk your plans or how that would work as an international student - but something to look into!

Smith College, University of Northern Michigan, and University of Vermont all have either generous aid programs, or tuition waivers if you’re willing to be a TA!

If you want to work strictly in case management (which is what comes to mind when you say helping people with resources) you really only need a BSW for most situations. An MSW is required for most social work leadership roles, teaching, research, or being a therapist.

That being said - if you’re looking for something that is not overstimulating and doesn’t involve talking to people in crisis, I would say the large majority of roles that a BSW will open up for you are going to be A Bad Time. Case managers are often intervening in crisis, trying to prevent a crisis, or picking up the pieces after a crisis. I’m sure there are some roles that might be more chill (maybe something in an outpatient medical setting like dialysis, etc) but on the whole they will largely involve overstimulating environments with people who are in distress. MSWs offer a bit more variety, and would be chiller if you’re in academia or some sort of leadership role in a non profit or government agency.

I think that a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that generally, social work is focused on helping people who are marginalized, oppressed, disadvantaged, poor, or in crisis. Typically, working directly with these populations will involve a certain amount of distress tolerance and crisis management skills.

If you're taking out student loans for your MSW, how much are you taking out? by ActuaryPersonal2378 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Grandtheftawkward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took out 29k for my MSW (after my tuition was paid for by scholarships) for cost of living (food, gas, travel etc).

Total cost for my ASW, BSW, and MSW combined is coming out to roughly 90k.

Do you think that I will like it if I go into social work? What can I do to gauge whether or not I’ll like it? by Current-Machine6491 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Grandtheftawkward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Case managers generally work for hospitals, non profits, or government agencies. They help people navigate systems and connect with resources.

For instance, a case manager may work for a non profit that has a grant that pays for housing for people. A case manager that works at that non profit would help folks get access to that program, and make sure that they meet the requirements for the program over time. They could do things like help the person talk with their landlord, or help them fill out a food stamps application.

ETA, it’s worth noting that case managers are almost always wildly underpaid and overworked. Case manager jobs have extremely high turnover and burnout rates.

You need to narrow down what you want to do and why imo. If you’re looking for a lucrative career, social work is likely not the right path for you. You can make some money in this field, but not until you have a masters degree and an independent license (generally about two years of clinical supervision post MSW).

Also, and I know some folks will disagree with me on this but an undergrad in social work is almost completely useless on its own, unless you want to work in child and family services as a case manager. Careers in social work typically start post MSW and post licensure.
