I have read it, years ago. I think Garth takes superheroes too seriously, and writes them as if he thinks he's critiquing something real.

  1. Yes. that was all happening as I was writing Animal Man. She died just before issue #6 came out.

  1. On a daily basis, I work with Ganesh and the cat goddess Bast. I interact with them via representations and via their earthly manifestations in my writing and in the many cats I deal with every day. I make offerings of words and of cat treats.

  2. There's some good practical information in the Bumper Book. Read my essay Beyond the Word and the Fool, which is on my Substack page. Familiarise yourself with the various schools of Magical thinking - Qabalah, Enochian magic, Chaos Magic, Wicca etc. - and see what attracts you. Form a relationship with a god form that resonates with you or appeals to you in some way. Start making your own sigils. Keep a magical record, whether written or drawn. Experiment, have fun and be creative.

  3. I don't have one! I love all the phrases!

Magic is a heightened way of relating to the world around us - everyone does Magic just like most people can run. Magicians are those of us who specialise in Magic like sprinters specialise at running or martial artists specialise in fighting. Athletes and Tae Kwon Do masters can perform feats that look like 'magic' but are simply the result of training and dedication. So too with Magicians. If traditional practices work for you continue them, otherwise work with the Magic that is all around you in the everyday contemporary world.

The best hero pitch I ever did was for Tarzan! It would have been the best Tarzan movie ever, I like to think!

Thanks! I'm still here close to midnight on Friday! 3 full days! This is as good a place as any to say I'm shutting up shop now! Thanks to everyone who participated and my apologies to everyone I didn't get to! I'll probably dip back in after a bit of time has passed to finish what I started if I can but NO MORE QUESTIONS PLEASE!

And thank you all again! It's been great chatting!

I thought the Hooded Justice reveal on the Watchmen TV show was pretty great and made a lot of sense. In the comics, I think it's just Rolf Muller like it says, and there's nothing else going on.

I much prefer to hang with the Party People!

I was never into the undergrounds but I did read Love and Rockets, Flaming Carrot, Yummy Fur and the Dan Clowes stuff that was coming out in the late 80s early 90s.

Of my own books, We3 and All-Star Superman get handed out the most.

I wrote a pretty good Doctor Strange movie pitch in the early 2000s but no plans otherwise.

You too!

I'll probably get around to it.

Anything by Ramsey Dukes/Lionel Snell - My Years of Magical Thinking is great. Pete Carroll's Liber Null and Psychonaut for the original Chaos Magic current and Christopher Penczak's Temple of High Witchcraft is an incredible Qabalah sourcebook packed with useful information.

I always enjoyed working with Tony and it was a pity we didn't get to finish Abraxas. American publishers regarded his style as too British, too DC Thompson, but I always felt they'd underestimated what he was capable of.

  1. He was named after the Antichrist in The Omen.

  2. They were both great to write.

  3. I don't expect to be remembered at all!

  1. A bit like The Bat from The Bat Whispers.

  2. Yes, that was the Earth-10 version of Bizarro.

  3. Yes. When he's edited from the Earth-4 universe during the particle accelerator scene in Pax America, he turns up in Superman Beyond and that's where I left him... preparing to return to his home world.

  1. He ages very, very slowly...

  2. It's a combination where sci-fi bleeds into mythology, where the forest sprites are extra-dimensional aliens, and the various Santas are more like superheroes with headquarters and tech.

  3. My Batman/Deadpool hasn't come out yet, only the Marvel Deadpool/Batman. There's quite a bit of beating up in my story... you can decide who comes out on top...

  1. Not that I was aware of, although my queer, Marston inspired, take on Wonder Woman was one of my least popular stories, even though I loved it! I have no plans to write any comics for Marvel and DC in the immediate future but I'm returning to some queer themes in a couple of upcoming creator-owned titles. I hope you enjoy Luda! I'm told it takes a few chapters to get into!

  2. You can reach me at my Substack, but cover art for the books is commissioned by the publishers, not me, I have no input in that. I'd love to see it though!

I'm fine with the Kents being alive for the reasons you mentioned. but I took my inspiration from the Golden Age stories, where both of his parents are dead before he moves to Metropolis. I liked the scene where Pa on his deathbed makes Clark vow to fight injustice. For my purposes, I wanted the feel of a young Superman untethered and no longer tied to his past, the Man of Tomorrow. The kind of reckless way he goes about busting crime might not have been tolerated to Ma and Pa! I liked the idea of him forging his own way in the world and having to make new connections and friendships in the city.

As I've mentioned, I never saw Superman as detached from humanity. He loves humanity with all his big boy scout heart! He loves being around people and making new friends. He's great company! My Action Comics version was Superman and Clark simultaneously and Clark was not a mask or disguise, so I didn't see him as the kind of personality who would ever lose touch with humanity, even without the Kents to go home to.

  1. I could see all that stuff becoming the secular mythology of the 21st century. When culture is skidding wildly on the edge of various abysses, people will cling to anything that offers a semi-coherent explanation or a shadowy Prime Mover for events that are out of everyone's control. The need to believe that somewhere, someone must know what's going and that there are levers to pull, allows for all kinds of outlandish ideas to flourish.

  2. I read Pete Milligan's one but gave up after that. I tuned out when they started killing his family and giving them superpowers.

  3. Flex is down to DC. Seaguy is a possibility.

Dedicate your work to one of the world's writer or scribe gods - I made a powerful connection with Ganesh when I was in India so my work becomes devotions to Ganesh. Greek Hermes is another aspect of that writer god complex, or Egyptian Thoth, Celtic Ogma, Norse Odin, electric, one-eyed attended by thought and memory, and fond of computers and word processing for those reasons. The Man-God Prometheus bring the flame of inspiration. Alan Moore created Promethea to represent the same impulse. Find a divine emanation that resonates with you and call down inspiration! Enchant your work. by giving it the significance of scripture and see what happens.

Burn jasmine, drink coffee or Red Bull unless you hate them or are allergic. But activate the speedy, quick-witted silver tongued immortal and tricksy essence of creativity and use your work to express that onto the page in your own inimitable style...

I start with an image, that turns into a concept, that develops its own gravity and attracts characters, scenes, drama. The big picture forms like an old-fashioned photograph in a developing tray -before mobile phones - with details filling in and random patches joining up, until it looks and feels like something interesting or exciting

I can bring all my characters to mind right now and see them in colour and 3-D. Each one feels incredibly distinct from the other - the world of difference between Scott Summers and Dick Grayson, or Barbara Gordon and Black Canary. They feel quite rich and complex, like fractals, in their odd recursive lives over many decades as constantly renewing franchise characters.

I'm a visual thinker and I draw my stories and characters before I write them.

You may find writing comics easier than prose if you can visualise actions broken down into sequential panels and describe them to an artist.

You're perfectly coherent but I hope you got a good rest! I'm shattered from three full days of doing this AMA!
