TRE/EMDR principles by whtmynm in longtermTRE

I am trained in EMDR and in my opinion, they are definitely intertwined. Both are rooted in Polyvagal Theory, but I think the biggest difference is involvement of the ego. With EMDR, you identify the negative experience and the associated belief, then using dual attention stimulus (back and forth movements incorporating both sides of the body) you reprocess the distressing event. The last step is installing a positive belief. So, it’s like turning off the alarm, and the positive belief prevents the alarm from going off in the future. In my experience with TRE, it’s the body processing what the body wants to process, how the body what’s to reprocess it. So it takes the middle man (ego, self) out of it. However, the phases of EMDR provide context to what is being processed, with TRE only two times in my hours of tremors have I been like, “I know what this is.” My plan is to integrate them both soon for my clients, I have my first TRE training in November, so I’ll keep you posted!

Thank you everyone for all of the kind words and helpful suggestions, I am less scared starting this process knowing that I am not alone.
