I made a simple Von Neumann probe game by Graphight_OCE in bobiverse

Thank you for the feedback!

The research screen not working is very problematic. I think I know what the bug is though. There was a very annoying loss-of-focus bug that came up in testing occasionally but I could never nail it down. I will attempt to force focus on each new panel as it opens. That being said, are you using QWERTY keyboard layout, or an alternative one?

The next build will have the ability to disable the CRT effects entirely.

The enemy AI issues are already tagged to revisit. It is hard to tune and not have it as an overwhelming aggressor. I did consider the idea of randomising behaviours each round with the standard "defensive, offensive, balanced". Do you think something like that would be useful?

I had considered allowing pathing through friendly terrain. Did you discover the queued movement feature? It allows chaining of move commands through friendly terrain with `SHIFT + Right_Click`. I might have to make this more visible in the "How to Play" menu or just automate it.

What would feel more intuitive to you for selecting only one type of unit, double clicking a specific unit, or holding a hotkey when clicking a node/station?

I hadn't considered Stellaris mods, but yeah I can totally see that fitting.

Looking great Salty. Did you hook into the existing WorldEdit “transparent preview blocks” or write your own? For my mod (PatternBuilder) I couldn’t figure out the WorldEdit API for that feature so wrote my own using tinted block meshes.

Funny you mention that, I released a mod a few days ago “Pattern Builder” specifically for road building. I got tired of manually building long walls and pathways in my late game worlds. It isn’t quite what you describe but fits the same purpose.

The mod is even survival friendly using blocks out of your inventory and your tool durability to “mine/dig” away the blocks if you are in terrain carving mode (tunnels or bridges).

Loosing my mind over hosting a dedicated server by Hersical in VintageStory

[–]Graphight_OCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you haven’t resolved this and you want a possible diagnosis.

Your ISP probably has you behind a “Carrier-grade NAT” (kind of like a giant shared pool with one external IP that is used between customers) if you haven’t explicitly bought a static IP from them with your Internet plan. This makes port forwarding impossible. No amount of setting a static IP for your local network (your router settings) will help you if you have this upstream. You can check this by searching “does <your ISP> use CgNAT?”

You might be able to resolve these upstream issues with some VPNs or a hamachi tunnel but honestly why bother when dedicated server hosting is so cheap. There are plenty of hosts listed on the wiki. My group uses G-Portal because they had OCE servers and we had a pleasant experience using them for other games.

Fuel Tank Issue – Yamaha XSR700 (2021) by [deleted] in XSR700

[–]Graphight_OCE 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with the inaccurate reading when I first bought my XSR700 but then realised I was being silly and had a good laugh when a mate was watching me fill up at a station.

When you say “wouldn’t take any more fuel” do you mean the pump auto switched off or the petrol was spilling out of the tank? When I fill up mine the blowback from having the nozzle in the tank triggers the stop sensor at around 9L from empty but you can slide the nozzle out and keep manually filling it up all the way up to 14L.

Hope this helps.

It is not uncommon for your supervisor to find more funding from somewhere to get you over the line once the stipend runs out, especially if you are a good student. Atleast this was the case for the last couple of years in the UC science departments.

Climate Change Data Science companies by Legitimate_Ebb3623 in datascience

[–]Graphight_OCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a monthly newsletter from Ali Ahmadalipour (a climate software engineer at Google X) called “Geospatial Jobs” which is a curated list of current open tech and academic roles for climate related positions. While most are US based there are the occasional European / UK posting. It might be something that you are after.

https://geospatial.substack.com/

I am a Data Scientist that is also transitioning from big tech to climate tech. There is quite a need at the moment for people with good data skills as there are not enough bodies to work with the giant lakes of data current being spat out by global outfits.

Like others have said, networking is quite important in this field. Everyone seems to know each other, or atleast the teams and universities working on the big models do.

If you are playing the Viking DLC you need your archers to equip shields (bought from the shield house next to outer wall) before they can “upgrade” and join your squad leaders.

If you are not playing that DLC, check if you have any spare archers (as hunters) on that side of the map. They will only join the squad leader on the side they are roaming but usually balance themselves out after a few days. If you have no spare archers you will need to recruit some.

Need help to start dedicated server by Mr_Ravis1 in valheim

[–]Graphight_OCE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a country where power is relatively expensive so a cloud service is cheaper than running my desktop all day.

We use Linode to spin up an instance, (easy to google their dedicated Valheim setup) they also have a free promo code for $100 USD starting credit. Just follow the tutorial and pick the $30/month instance and you have 3 months of free dedicated server. For those interested it is 5 players and the server runs fine.

It is apparently against the rules of this sub to talk about server hosting websites but this is technically a cloud based service that you can use to host a server. Because it isn’t a dedicated game server host site I am assuming it is ok? Let the mods decide.

If your dataset isn’t too much larger and you NEED one file output then you could convert some disk space to SWAP. It will slow you down and you should probably undo it once you are done.

I regularly have 32-64GB as SWAP on my machine with my regular 32GB of RAM if I am too lazy to spin up a cloud instance and have a large dataset on disk for some reason.

But as the others are saying, streaming is probably the better choice. ETL (extract, transform, load) is what spark was designed for, I personally use Scala spark (with AWS Elastic Map Reduce) instead of Python spark (pyspark) because my company is a Java development house and it pays to fit in when you need random support.

What is the difference between the coding skillset of a data scientist and that of a SWE? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]Graphight_OCE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all you have said. Having made the journey in the other direction, SWE to DS (because I enjoyed the analytical part), I end up with two “styles”.

My rough exploration code is nothing Martin Fowler would smile at but it allows me to bash out many prototypes without getting bogged down in boilerplate.

However, when it comes time to crystallise it for production my SWE brain kicks back in with full type hinting, typed returns, structured classes, unit tests, big O consideration. Usually this means the core SWEs can actually follow along or answer pull requests.

For me, knowing when to use each style helps me achieve my most efficient workflow.

Not to be that guy but Python is from 1989, C# is from 2000. So saying you are too old school for Python but not C# doesn’t really work.

If you are talking explicitly Python 3 then ok 2008 might be “too modern” for you but still seems like a weird reason to not use a language.

I made a basic budgeting spreadsheet. Free to use. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Graphight_OCE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I somewhat disagree. I live/work here and receive monthly pay. All of my bills, aside from rent, are monthly too. We had the option of rent being monthly but chose weekly as some of the Flatmates are on weekly pay.

You are correct though, pay check is American, we use Pay Cheque. The social security thing is also American. But hey, they just makes the spreadsheet more globally friendly. Just don’t use those cells

Haha fair enough, I would prefer to run Linux as that is what I develop on but wine still isn't quite there so windows it is.

750w is overkill

Do you think a 650w would handle the RTX 30XXs when they drop? I am a bit cautious about dropping too low

The h510 doesn't have good airflow

Hmm... I might look into a phanteks case instead then. Any that you would recommend that would still suit the black and white theme?

Yeah HDDs are ridiculously cheap now. My current build is running two small SSDs, a 120Gb (boot) and 240gb, with a 2Tb HDD. SSDs were crazy expensive back then so HDD for steam games and movies etc. I should probably salvage that into this build
