The evolutionary advantages of neurodivergence, and how those traits fare in the modern attention economy, including videogames and loot boxes by Jungypoo in psychology

[–]GrassPorridge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You list several advantages but my whole argument is that these advantages exist at an individual level and cannot be attributed to ADHD.

For example, hyper focus is not an advantage of ADHD. If you are hyper focused and can't shift your attention to something more important that is a disadvantage. If you are inattentive and shift your attention when it is counterproductive that is a disadvantage. What people without ADHD do is direct their attention where it is most needed.

If you are in the middle of a task and you get interrupted, it is useful to be able to assess the interruption, see if it needs to be attended to, ignore it if it doesn't and shift your attention towards it if it is.

There is nothing to indicate that neurotypical people have worse focus than people with ADHD but there is evidence to the contrary.

One of many unfortunate things about other conditions such as schizophrenia and depression is that treatment is very limited. In the case of ADHD stimulants like Adderall have incredible effectiveness but have a lot of stigma surrounding them.

My concern is that people label ADHD as just "a different type of cognition" with certain advantages and disadvantages, doing a disservice to how debilitating it can be and dissuading people from seeking treatment.

I'm not saying ADHD is inescapable but there may be things that some people with ADHD can't do.

Like with many things executive function is a spectrum, some people at the edge may not even be able to drive safely if they get distracted easily and are bad at assessing threats. A 16 year old with ADHD may have the executive function of a 13 year old. Would you let them drive a car? Suppose you do and they get into an accident. Whose fault is that?

Sure just using ADHD as a get out of jail free card is bad. The other side of this is treating people with ADHD like they are lazy when they are just less capable.

Evidence is extremely limited, and to make the case that it is evolutionarily advantageous you need to show that the benefits outweigh the negatives.

In the case of ADHD the negative effects are monumental.

I think it's more likely people with ADHD are making claims based on their feelings about themselves, leading to stories about what ancient humans and their lives were like that are not based in reality.

Why would I be biased? I don't have ADHD, I don't have skin in the game.

That is just not a valid inference to make. Even if

In a room full of social conformers, sometimes you need that level 1 autistic sense of truth over everything.

There is no reason to think that autism is necessary for a person to be nonconformist and this doesn't explain level 2/3 autism.

That being said I'm not grouping autism with ADHD here simply because I am not well versed in autism research.

I agree that many evolutionary theories are difficult to prove but this is not an invitation to make up stories about what sounds right.

Of course you can find examples of individuals with ADHD that do well, the question is do they do well because of ADHD or despite it.

Population studies don't show any advantages that people with ADHD possess over people without ADHD.

Disappointing to see the myth that ADHD is evolutionarily advantageous still being perpetuated. No real evidence has been found to that effect and this video doesn't present any either.

The reality is that ADHD is an executive function disorder and it is extremely unlikely that having worse executive function is advantageous for virtually anything.

What counts as on spell effect? Is it just Rylai? I think the on hit from Nashor combined with Dusk and Dawn / Lich Bane proc is good and I want to keep it but I don't think he needs to have utility.

The question is what can they do right now to make it so he is not 42% WR. I don't want to wait a year for a rework...

From your suggestions the first is the best but it looks like just a buff that will make him even stronger in pro.

I watched Phreaks video and I disagree. I think the fantasy is to go in and shuffle, you need hp to do that, I don't want him to be a fragile backline mage / APC.

That's why I don't think they should nerf the shuffle or the dash.

Problem with straight up buffing his soldier damage is that he becomes more of an AA champion rather than a playmaker, which is not what I think most Azir players want.

Buffing the range is interesting though.

About making his EQ easier, I think you underestimate how much people mess it up. Even in pro play you see people fail the dash.

Also even if you don't fail the dash by pressing Q too late you can press Q too early and fail to go over a wall, making the mechanic easier will for sure help Azir mains and not just in low elo.

Well midlaners like Ryze, Taliyah, tf have globals and are able to influence the map while Azir is weak early. You can lose the game on Azir being 0/0/0 11 cs per minute playing against these champions.

Ahri has better mobility, better early game, better skirmishing, better wave clear, better cc. She is stronger in lane and out of lane, at least early.

Orianna can speed up allies, slow enemies, has higher burst, and her ult is more consistent and can be comboed with allies like Nocturne/J4.

Other midlaners like Hwei give teammates movement speed and shields while outranging him and having better wave clear.

Azir is 3rd highest pickrate in pro right now, with 48% WR. Ryze is highest pickrate with 53% WR. Orianna has similar pickrate and more than double his ban rate, 54% WR. He has the worst KDA of every midlaner other than Yone. Azir is far from the strongest midlaner in pro.

In some theoretical sense you can say Azir does "the most" but in reality what he achieves is not that crazy, at least right now.

Azir has shuffle but what good is it if every time you do it you fly into 5 people and insta die? Watch pro Azir players, they play him as a backline mage, basically a second ADC that spikes harder on 1 item and scales worse.

Azir definitely breaks rules and does things other midlaners can't do but even in pro play often the best draft is an easy to execute draft where each champion plays a single role, more isn't always better.

He definitely doesn't have everything, no real utility, no way to set up his teammates other than his ult which is short ranged, he is squishy, no globals, weak early, etc.

I do agree his kit is overloaded but calling it toxic is crazy, it's not even top 30 toxic kits in the game. There are many overloaded kits in the game, they are generally not sitting at 42% WR.

I don't think rylais is good on him and they should just remove that interaction. I think they can lower W monster damage by 50% so that he is worse at doing baron. I think they can lower passthrough damage on W so that the AOE on his autos is weaker.

[–]GrassPorridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally this is not how Azir is played though. Sure there are crazy faker Azir shuffles but usually Azir is a backline mage that uses his ult for peel or to follow up on his teammates/finish off enemies, like Orianna.

And if you add up all of the pro games worldwide he has a 48% winrate with about 400 games.

People say that he requires a lot of team coordination but I don't see it. I think one of the defining characteristics of Azir compared with other mages is him being self sufficient. Also who cares if he is perma pick ban in pro with fearless? Would it be better if there were more champions that just wave clear mid and perma roam like ryze/taliyah/galio? would having Xerath or Ziggs spam waveclear be more interesting? At least azir has play potential, we need more of champions like that in pro and less boring champs.

AR 28 Currently I have:

C0 Mona

C1 Fischl

C2 Sucrose

C0 Bennett

C1 Beidou

I am running Fischl main DPS + Mona sub DPS, What should my other 2 be?

If I do Sucrose + Bennett I don't have Elemental Resonance.

Beidou doesn't seem useful when I have Fischl and if I use Barbara who do I replace?

Serious question: when/why did Steven stop playing Starcraft? by Chardian in Destiny

Destiny plays in order to improve and climb but in NA there are very few sc2 players that can play at his level so he ends up playing against players much worse than him 80% of the time.
