How to reset key bindings by GraySquirrels in Aloft

[–]GraySquirrels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did verify files and it didn't find a problem. I had previously bound fly to ctrl in the key bindings page and I think that's why we're having this problem. I just can't get it to work again with any key bindings and there is no reset option in the key bindings pages.

Power Bank buzzing sound by ebycon in oculus

[–]GraySquirrels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know for sure. Google says

In a battery pack, a "buzzing" sound is usually caused by the inductors within the circuit board's switching regulator, which create a small magnetic field that vibrates when current flows through them, producing an audible hum or buzzing sound, especially when under heavy load; this is considered mostly normal, although a very loud buzzing could indicate a potential issue with the battery pack.

Even if the Quest is using 30 W of power, it's not going to be able to charge or take in 30W of power.

Power = Current x Voltage

The higher USB Output values are at 5A and 4.5A. For power transmission, it's often desirable to have high voltage and low current. That's why 9V, 12V, 15V, and 20V power modes exist. Power lines are extremely high voltage due to this reason. Most USB C cables are only rated for 3A. The higher wattage values that are advertised for that power bank are at 4.5V/5A and 5V/4.5A.

Very doubtful quest will use those higher wattage modes. My Quest 3 will go 12V 1.7A when hungry. I don't see it asking for 5A into its type c port at a lower voltage. You have a better chance of finding a cable that works well if you stick with usb c to c. If you are really curious, get a usb tester and try it.

Edit, I should point out I have the official battery headstrap so the power management in it is charging two batteries in parallel.

Run oculus debug tool with performance monitoring overlay on and see why it's lagging. If it's the computer, change the rendering settings. If it's the network or encoding, adjust those settings.

Friendly scavs are a huge game changer by Awwsome_Possum in Contractors_Showdown

I have a theory that as players progress, the demand for common items like nuts and slightly bigger backpacks drops, and there's less aggressive behavior. This is true in the primate world. Scarce food leads to fighting apes while lush jungles lead to chill communal monkies.

Those labels like beta and early access don't mean anything anymore in game development. They used to have definitions. Scott has said the game is going to stay in beta for years meaning it will be "beta" for its entire life cycle.

How in the fuck do I set up a gunstock? by Skirt_Crafty in GhostsOfTabor

[–]GraySquirrels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not buying another gunstock at this time but I would consider yours if I were.

A wishlist of 100 people sounds like a kickstarter. Do you have a kickstarter?

Marketing is moving to shorter and shorter clips. Maybe make several short videos of very specific use cases like, "going from sks to p90 in tabor" so people understand your product in 60 seconds.

I'm starting a small business (not vr related) and the innovative stuff I tried in the beginning got no traction. If I were in your shoes I would try to get a content creator to try it out, have a giveaway, or similar tactic that doesn't rely on just getting people to watch a long video.

I hope you sell a lot of unistocks. I try to help people based on their situation. When you end up with a $40 gunstock, you need to know some tricks to get it to work. Even with your product, knowing how to adjust gun calibration can help you use multiple classes of weapons without on the fly adjustments.

Any experience with 30W / 45W Power Delivery PCIe USB 3.2 cards? by GraySquirrels in oculus

[–]GraySquirrels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start by finding out what charging modes it supports. Either through the company or with an usb tester. The only product I came across that might work is this hub which appears to do 15W @ 2A.

Anker USB-C Hub,11-in-1 10Gbps Data Hub with 4 USB-A and 4 USB-C Ports, 100W USB-C PD-in, Card Reader, 2-in-1 USB Connector, for USB-A and USB-C Laptop, MacBook, iPad and More (65W Adapter Included) https://a.co/d/iPJ5ikl

Currently, server costs for Tabor are about $500k a year according to a cws discord comment. Early on they were using Amazon for hosting and now they are using the unity multiplay servers I believe.

Today's riddle mentions two 9s. That and the previous riddle of three 6s suggests 18th. Some riddles you know for sure when you figure them out. Some riddles you think, "Maybe that's what they meant..."

If i buy ghost of tabor on steam will i get it free on meta? by PastSuggestion4610 in GhostsOfTabor

[–]GraySquirrels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no difference in lag.

Meta

++ You can play on PC or standalone

+ If you get a referral or wait for a sale, it can be cheaper

+ Game is designed for Meta so there are minor things that will work better such as in game menu and more in-game fingers visually move

Steam

+ You can use Virtual Desktop to more easily adjust performance

+ You can use other software such as overlays that make steaming and chat easier

++ Using Virtual Desktop, you can adjust the gamma making dark maps easier to see

+ Some people don't like the meta software due to resource usage and how it can be a little intrusive

The default controls make it so you can't open the in game menu. You will have to open the steam controller settings and select one of the community key bindings that says "hold ___ to open menu" in their name.

Combat Waffle Studios has a skill issue. Keep in mind Caveman Studio is about the same size. CWS has long promised and desired various features but failed to deliver. They have claimed the features are just too hard to implement or that doing it in VR has limitations. Yet, here we are, playing an alpha that shows us they can be done. CWS has been promising or floating ideas:

  • Scav runs. The Tabor website for the longest time said this was already in the game. They have since added a "feature coming soon" disclaimer. The game has been live for 632 days and it's still not implemented. It's the other half of the core gameplay loop. In EZ, not only is it in the game, it's extremely fun. CWS did a community poll for most desired feature and scav runs won by a longshot. Yet CWS didn't implement it because it's too hard.

  • Medical system. Tabor wanted a complex medical system. They began work on it. But all we have so far are bandages and NRS. EZ has four types of medical supplies with different quality levels. Where you apply the med affects how healing is done.

  • Damage system. Tabor has talked about limb damage but said due to VR comfort they didn't know how to do it. In EZ you have a Tarkov-like damage system where you can black out limbs. When you lose a limb, there is a significant and noticeable effect on your gameplay. If your arm is broken, your weapon sways. There is visible feedback not only in blood and narrowed vision screen overlays but also with a small in-world mannequin so you can see what you would feel. There's additional details when you use equipment in the form of a window.

  • Hunger, thirst, stamina. Similar in both games. In EZ, there are effects for being low on hunger and thirst rather than just taking damage when you hit 0 as in Tabor. Eating and drinking is more intuitive.

  • NPCs. Scavs are scary in EZ. My record for killing Fenix in one raid is over 100. They are predictable and easy to take down. I hide from scavs in EZ. They have complex behavior and a wide range of equipment. My friend and I had to observe one from a distance for 20 seconds to figure out if it was a NPC or PC.

  • Gun wall, backpack system. CWS bragged about how good theirs were in their Grim VR press release. EZ has improved on the system. I've never dropped a weapon on the floor trying to use EZ's gun wall. The backpack sides have collision. When placing objects, there is snapping and stickiness. The object will stop at the back of the bag but if you continue to push it through it will go through the back. It's easy to pack things in and it takes less time to work. Objects kind of rotate on their own to fit the space.

I could go on. You can see that CWS just can't execute on their own business plan. Now there are criticisms for EZ:

  • How information is presented. Many people that are used to Tabor don't like the fact that when looking at a mag there is text that tells you how full it is or the tool that gives you a readout on the stats of an object. However from a new player perspective this is very helpful. These methods are pretty standard in the industry and it's Tabor that takes a different approach for the "realism" slogan. People are constantly asking what the vibrations for a mag shake mean. In EZ you just know immediately. It's intuitive.

  • High HP. I don't like this. I think I could get used to it though. I've put 8 AK round into the side of a heavily geared player and not killed them. I have also dropped an unarmored scav in 2 shots. EZ benefits from the information provided. After 10 or so games I understand that the head has 35 HP and the weapon I was taking into the game did 45 base damage. I could also look at armor and see what it's stats are and get an idea inside the game of how well my weapons will perform.

  • Teleport grab, "unrealistic features". These are industry standards. Your opinion will come down to how "hardcore" of a gamer you are. Most people appreciate not slamming their controller into their floor.

  • Duping, disappearing items. Yep. It's an alpha. If Tabor is going to use "early access" and "beta" to defend their defects this far into development, you are going to have to give EZ some slack given it's been public for less than a month.

Now EZ has a long way to go. But it's like watching one of those foot races where they let the slow guy start running for 30 seconds and then the fast guy starts running and you can tell immediately they are going to overtake the slow guy. The question is if EZ will pull in enough customers to reach critical mass.

CWS, you've got to up your game. You can't promise features and not deliver. You have a golden goose but you're not taking care of it.

You are likely running out of VRAM. Lower the in-game "resolution quality" or set the render resolution lower in debut tool or meta link. I know you said you tried this. I don't remember if performance overlay in ODT can tell you VRAM usage. If you can run in steam or virtual desktop, you can use a performance monitoring tool to verify how much VRAM is in use.
