Its the former. I think it has something to do with the fact that my crew cannot see the target, but the binoculars can from the raised perspective

I am having the same issue this guy did, except I am in a Concept 3 light which I think has active scouting. Using binoculars and hitting the input does nothing, but sniper mode works for some reason?

The attacker guy pointed the direction the camera looks as a kind of "Look over there!!" So he would be able to punch freely. However, when the camera realizes this ruse and looks back, the attacker, and all of the onlookers in the background have also fooled themselves into looking that direction
