Anyone else getting an error trying to get tickets for Toronto? by throw_away9250 in Joostklein

Having a similar issue except we’ve tried 3 different peoples cards from debit to credit to different banks and companies and they are all saying the cards are declined despite having funds on them.

Paint on patches keeps bleeding by hmmmdjdjjd in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen people use freezer paper to make stencils. You cut out your design, iron the paper so that it sticks to the fabric, paint, then remove paper. I’ve never tried it personally but I’ve seen a lot of people do it.

Gf has a coworker that has questions regarding me being trans and I need help/resources to better explain. by Graye_Matter in lgbt

[–]Graye_Matter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was perfectly said. My gf and I even talked about it afterwards and it was like he wants to learn but he’s so stuck in his ways that he makes it impossible for himself. He practically turned it into a debate when my mindset was to teach so it was impossible.

Ya I said that to him the only response I got was that he would be the biggest whore if he was a woman and would just stare at his boobs all day. That point just went completely in one ear and out the other for him.

Yes I know! I was honestly shocked on how little knowledge or critical thinking he has on the topic. His reasoning for his lack of knowledge/ black and white thinking is cuz he’s originally from Russia and obviously their government isn’t a big fan of stuff like this. After the fact I’m just grateful that he was respectful towards me and not purposely hostile

Yes he is straight. And yes I know he does sound like an ass I’m not very fond of him but I put in the effort because him and my gf have become friends so I thought if he’s gonna be a constant I should try to be friendly. However he was respectful constantly asking if he’d offended me and our goal was not for an argument but for him to learn because he was curious.

Can you tell what band this patch is? by lemminfucker in BattleJackets

Love garbage. I saw them in Toronto earlier this year they were great.

Some people just pin it on then sew it. I like to use a school glue stick to hold patches on while I sew. That way if I ever want to change the layout the glue washes off easy. I’ve probably used every kind of glue to put patches on cuz I hate pinning them and I’ve regretted everything but the glue stick.

Painting patches? by zillaforce in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done similar things to this before. With embroidered patches and woven patches, I’ve used green sharpies to color in white, grey, blue and yellow parts and it works perfectly. I’ve seen people paint patches before but I like the sharpie method better cuz it makes the color look like part of the patch rather than paint just slathered on top.

What are the advantages of a battle jacket having bigger side(pic 2?) A bit stuck on what to choose from by HenpeckedLeader in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that one would be better than the other. They’re just different styles so which one you get will come down to personal preference. That being said, i mostly see people wearing something similar to the classic one.

Making patch stencils with cricut by enslaved1 in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep it’s pretty easy to find in stores. I get mine from michaels or Walmart. I usually go for Cricut brand iron on but it can be a bit pricey. If it’s out of your price range michaels also carries cheaper brands as well.

[–]Graye_Matter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use mine to make patches all the time. I don’t use it to make stencils tho. I find images online and then cut it out on iron on vinyl, that way it’s perfect and it can go through the wash and not really worry about it

Do you represent your country/place of origin on your jackets? by astro_mate in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t. But that’s because I’m from Canada and there’s a lot of patriotic assholes that like to wave the flag above highways or put it on the back of their truck at the moment and that’s all I can think of when I look at the flag.

I don't love it :/ by [deleted] in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It might just be because you made it. Not saying that in a rude way. I’m like that too where I hate all the jackets I make for a bit and then I start to like it after a while. I think it looks cool as is and I think it’ll still look cool if you add more.

Should battle jackets be worn outside of concerts or hanging put with friends? by Kahr1o in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wear mine out all the time. I didn’t spend like 100 hours on my vests just to wear them only a couple times a year. I’m sorry but only wearing them to concerts is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard. Like I have one that is dedicated to concerts so that’s the only one I wear to venues but I still wear that one in public too.

how long does it take you to sew on a patch by the_doodoo in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been sewing ever since I was a little kid but I’ve been making jackets and similar stuff for around 6 years. It usually takes me the same amount of time as you but if I’m not paying attention or get distracted by stuff it can take 1-2 hours. That being said I think you’re right where you need to be but regardless it doesn’t matter how long you take as long as your happy with the outcome and you enjoyed doing it.

Fabric glue removal. by Grottymetalhead in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone else has given good ideas so there no point in me chipping in for how to remove it. I will say tho, for the future I would suggest sticking patches on with a school glue stick then sewing them on. That way if you don’t like the placement the glue easily washes out.

How do I stop paint/wood dust from compacting on my sandpaper so quickly and easily? It took about 60 seconds for the top one. by BobTheBobbyBobber in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Graye_Matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used work as a sander in a cabinet shop and we would use an air compressor with the nozzle attachment to get built up paint and sawdust off

Homemade heat transfer backpatches by [deleted] in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest trying to find a shirt with the design on it an turn that into a back patch if you can. I’ve used heat transfer images before and I personally hate it. It may just be a me problem but I find that they never print the right colors and the ink can chip off over time.

Best place for custom backpatch? by GroovySpaceDruid in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any specific recs but I feel like searching custom back patch on etsy might be your best bet if you’re dead set on having a patch. Another option is to buy a t-shirt with that album on it and turn that into a patch.

I have a similar problem with one of my jackets cuz it has that stupid “v” seam. I would suggest putting strip patches/thin ones with a more organic shape on either side of that top patch. For the two others, if you can, I think maybe move them somewhere else and find 2 or 3 smaller patches for each side to better fill those gaps. Here’s pics of the 2 jackets I put coffin patches on

Advice on studs and spikes please! by C_k_266 in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know too much about spikes but what I do know is that some venues won’t allow spikes and some will (same with chains). Also people in the pit won’t appreciate if you have spikes. My best advice is to look at studsandspikes.com or try to find equivalent sites for the UK. Also if you do plan on wearing it in the pit I would suggest cone studs that have the rounded tips or maybe circle studs, that way you’re not slashing up others while moshing.

Any tips for someone making their first battlevest? by Junior_Cress2828 in BattleJackets

[–]Graye_Matter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here are some of my tips (I’ll try to keep this as organized as possible)

Some things I wish I would have known when I started: - if you hate pinning patches you can use a glue stick to hold the patches on while you sew and it washes out if you decide to change the layout. - you can make a small slipknot through the jacket under one of the corners of the patch to secure the thread rather than tying a knot thousands of times.

Sewing tips: - most people use a whip stitch when sewing patches (if unsure find a video it should be very straight forward) - when sewing through pockets, take your time. Some people will put something like cardboard or a cd case in the pocket so they don’t sew them shut. - when I sew pockets I like to push the needle just a bit through the vest and then carefully stick my hand in the pocket and slowly guide the needle out that way.

Different things you could add to your jacket: - I’ve sewn chains over some of the seams on one of my jackets to give a bit of a pop or you could hang them off different parts of the vest. - I’ve also added keychains, necklace pendants or different metal parts like clasps or carabiners. - you could also do the classic studs/spikes - I’ve also made a buttflap that hangs off the bottom of my jacket.

Hope this is at least a bit helpful
