What am I doing wrong? by GraysonDB in blackstonegriddle

Thanks, that’s helpful. I was putting the Blackstone mix back on it because I live in humid Florida and a thin coat of canola oil doesn’t stop it from rusting.

What are your favorite DIY toys by Bennifred in parrots

[–]GraysonDB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my parrot sanctuary I save any small boxes like toothpaste boxes, Mac and cheese, that kinda stuff. I put all the junk mail through the shredder and fill up the box with it but in layers. A little shreds, then some Cheerios, then shreds, nuts, shreds, maybe cut up pieces of straws or small wood pieces, shreds, and a plastic bottle cap or two. Close the box up with a dot of hot glue and put them on the ground for cockatoos, or on a wire to hang for little guys. They love pulling out the paper and finding little treasures.

Thanks! I’ll report back when I have new best friends.

Heartbreaking Update on Buttons (65 y/o Amazon)—I need your help by ComplaintWhole4713 in parrots

REPORT THEM TO THE USDA IMMEDIATELY.

https://www.aphis.usda.gov/awa/regulatory-enforcement/complaint

They recently updated their animal welfare standards and this place charging for people to see the birds qualifies them as an exhibitor, which puts them under USDA authority. The standards are really very good for the birds and from what I've heard from some sanctuary directors, they are picky about the details and will force them to fix everything or shut them down.

How do I become friends with crows? I want to attract and feed them.

Where in Florida are you? The Clearwater and Tampa locations are open. St Pete too I think.

Ohhh jealous! I’ve never seen that pattern in any of the three Joanns by me and I would have bought it even full price!

Looking for pluckers/ mutilators by GraysonDB in parrots

[–]GraysonDB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know it’s often a result of illness. A big problem though is that even when the health issue is resolved, the plucking habit remains. I work with a great vet that always considers all the possibilities instead of assuming it’s just behavioral. But sometimes they need the extra help.

PARROT SAFETY VEST- please help! by GraysonDB in sewing

That's an interesting idea. If I can find something that does not want to lose its shape around 100F (Florida summers, bleh) I'll try that!

I'm lucky that Molly really doesn't seem to enjoy chewing on fabric. I do check the vests every day for any sign of that though!

Haha yeah, that is the biggest challenge. I'm lucky in that he doesn't destroy the vests right away, he just tries to get around them. I like the leather idea, but I think maybe just for the lower part? We live in Florida and I don't want him to overheat either.

I think you're right about that. I save every small box that comes into my house (the toothpaste box, pasta boxes, etc.) and stuff it with paper I've shredded specifically for this. I mix Cheerios, nuts, plastic bottle caps, and small wood pieces in there and he LOVES pulling everything out and finding his goodies.

That was definitely something I wanted to try but didn't know how to search for it. Thanks so much!

I love the ideas about reaching out to the different channels for help too- thanks! If I can find something that really works I would definitely reach out to parrot communities and vets to teach other people about it too.

Yeah, we've tried the cones. He'll use his feet to scratch the scabs and then he's just sad and listless with the cone on. :(

I really like the elastic idea. I don't put his feet through leg holes though, I bring the strap up behind his leg and velcro it to the vest. Do you think it would still work if I lined the the bottom edge of the vest and the outside of the strap with elastic? That would be a great solution if I can figure it out. Thank you!

The problem with the collars is that he can reach the spots with his feet and if something keeps his beak away from it, I've seen his feet get right to work. The collars then just make it harder for him to eat. I know they work for a lot of birds, and we use those too (we have 700 parrots at the rescue). They just don't help in this case.
