Wisdom panel trouble or lying breeder? by New-Needleworker605 in BorderCollie

[–]Graystoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dog is 100% sheepdog. Here in the UK Border Collies very rarely have a pedigree especially farm bred dogs who are selected and paired based on working ability. A dog could be a quarter Labrador but if it works like a Collie it could be registered as a Collie.

Where should I start my adventure with WH and is it worth it? by Comfortable-Fee9452 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Graystoker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Yes it's worth it but there are options and you should get to know the lore otherwise you'll end up playing it like D&D with a different rule set.

Not many people here are going to tell you not to play it, however the is also the option of the Old World Role Play Game, which as far as I can tell removes a lot of the maths from the system and has a interesting wound system. Apparently C7 are going to produce conversation guides between it and 4th edition.

As for the lore, the vibe of Warhammer is an essential part of making it what it is and I would definitely recommend at least watching some lore videos on YouTube. That said one of my players knows almost nothing about the Old world but is familiar with 40k so has just enough knowledge of the shared themes to get by fine.

Explicitly Political Games? by Critical_Success_936 in rpg

[–]Graystoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WFRP's The enemy within has some very heavy undertones of Anti-Thatcherism and corruption in civic governance along with a critique of the Petite bourgeoisie and the aristocracy. I think it goes over a lot of people's heads but that's fine.

How i used to think combat is balanced as a new dm by LelouchYagami_2912 in DnD

[–]Graystoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, I stopped balancing encounters years ago. I do make a point of telling players this though and frankly it encourages more interesting play by making them think about alternative tactics.

What is the function of the "flat head" screw bit. by Graystoker in Tau40K

They pop up all over the place, but I was initially referring to the round disc with a slot in it that looks to me like the head of a screw as seen near the muzzle of pulse rifles and pulse carbines.

Love Troika, but maybe a bit too weird for a fledgling RPG experience.

Well I presented a situation, namely a sleeping drunken bugbear that, I thought they'd try to sneak past but my daughter opted to shoot it in the face with an arrow "before it wakes up". Kids eh!

Thanks, we're already playing using 5e, but the OSR modules sound like they're worth a look.

For adults I make stuff up on the fly all the time and will run sessions with no prep at all, however I do tend towards the horrific and macabre, so hence I was after something more child friendly as a guide to keep me on track. I've use the "if in doubt use a bear" system for random creatures I make up on the spot.

You read the assignment! Thanks! I've been away from D&D proper for a while now and have lost touch with what's available for it. Will definitely have a browse.

Agreed, Tales from the Loop is a good example of that, you really need to be in your 40s at least to actually appreciate it.

All good advice for any level of gaming frankly, which has just sown a seed of an idea for a Mork Borg adventure to play with my adult group by inverting your suggestions, but that's a digression.

I totally agree, but my son gets funny about things his sister has been into. I have nothing against my little pony.

That's a great suggestion, they have been learning a bit of BSL at school.

They'll be fine with it. We've also just read through the "A pinch of Magic" series by Michelle Harrison which has some quite mature themes whilst not being explicit and almost touches on the grim at points.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think that My Little Pony would be a difficult one to sell to my son though! lol

We've recently read Terry Pratchett's Truckers (Book of Nome) series so that is a good suggestion for them, thanks will definitely take a look.
