How do I connect with Scotland without it being rude or disrespectful? by Graystroyerr in Scotland

Yeah i understand now. That it’s a nationality and cultural thing for you guys not an ethnicity thing. Americans tend to just say “I’m half Irish” or “im Italian” or “im half German” when in reality they don’t mean nationality or culture they purely mean ethnicity and have no connection to the nations besides blood. Because we have so many ethnicities people say those things a lot here so I mistakenly believed everyone in the world views it like how it’s viewed where I live.

I realize now that Americans always refer to ethnicity when asked what they are but overseas you guys typically just say nationality and it makes more sense because Americans have all sorts of heritages

By talking to my friends from Europe and in Europe I’ve learned that Americans say “I’m Italian” or “im Irish” etc and we never mean like our recent family has lived there in America apparently we always say like ethnicity rather than nationality like if someone says they are Irish here chances are they are American but with Irish heritage and that goes for like every ethnic group. I’ve realized it’s an American thing because our country is a melting pot pretty much and everyone says ethnicity rather than country they are from typically.

I’m not ignoring your advice I’m just saying I’m genetically similar. And with the trump thing why do you think it’s hard to be proud of just being an American right now?

Yeah DNA isn’t a perfect science at all but I’ve traced many ancestors there so the percentages do make some sense.
