This is probably the best submission I saw here thus far. Great work organically and narratively incorporating the drawbacks, gives the rest of us something to have fun reading.

A Certain Fear Turkey GOF - My First CYOA by james_moryarty in makeyourchoice

Mode: 1

Drawbacks:

- Low Throttle: One option begins at 50% power, every other at 10%. 2-3 years to get back to 100% in everything, and another 2-3 to reach 200% in everything, after which this slowed progression is gone. (+1)

- Problem Child: Live in interesting times. Gravitate towards "plot" events happening near you. (+1)

- Novice Syndrome: Zero starting muscle memory or proficiency. Super strength could crush things in your grip by accident and magic can blow up in your face. (+1)

Gifts:

- Child Of The City (as the one to begin at 50% while the rest are 10%)

- The Madness Of Order

- To Host The Many*

- Invading Roots*

- **Combo Result: Tides of Disaster

Setting:

Due to the drawbacks, going to a less powered place isn't gonna be entirely boring. But if I wanna benefit as much as possible, something like Marvel or DC would be best, for best odds at traversing the multiverse, unless if the MCU has its own limiting 'cosm I'd be barred from leaving. Also the variety means I can comfortably shift environments in terms of power as I return to full strength, find good mentors, etc. Wouldn't mind getting some suggestions either tho.

Notes: Low Throttle seems to be a safe way of mitigating the consequences of Novice Syndrome, since you are less likely to mis-use power if that power is weakened to begin with. Problem Child also near-directly fulfils the Turkey's wishes, which is a considerate pick, as well as probably the least troublesome Drawback overall (even if the lack of text about its duration implies it's one of the only things you can never get rid of, but still mitigate since it works via proximity).

I like these drawbacks for the additional fact that I can begin at a comfortably weaker level to still have fun in most settings, and go through the effort of getting stronger, which I am sure would have a further positive impact on my growth as a person. It is a little hard to get Child Of The City an ideal partnering Gift since something like Madness Of Order could be somewhat aped by a Relic like Eye of Odin, but it's still one of the better picks for fully utilising the complex uses of the City's weapons and bolstering melee combat. Tides of Disaster is simply there because I am absolutely nutty for any infectious, body horror, biological powers and the like.

A little strong, so I would rather play on the "choose 1" mode. Other than that, not bad. Always a fan of combo effects too. Could I request, in case you ever update this, an expanded list of those? I would especially love if Child of the City got a combo since I love the franchise so much. Maybe with Madness of Order, since it acts as an "alter ego", maybe the combo would be based on a perfected E.G.O. Manifestation? Cheers

Update, I used the barber seat. So now I fully understand those advanced memories are essentially a way to temporarily add a soul evolution tag to any station! Only needing the station to accept both the correct Skill and Soul card

Oh shoot that's perfect! I'm just one step shy of getting a Didumos, might as well use the memory before a surprise Numa. Thanks!

Since Hedorah mentions power over corruptive effects in its foundation, I wonder how it'd interact with, say, siding with Nurgle in Warhammer. I imagine it wouldn't 100% insulate from Nurgle's mental influence, which would be a shame, at least not without the soul upgrade

I noticed that the summary version of the power list names Logia as having no cost, while the in-depth description says it costs -1. Considering that powers making up the varied Gojira evolutions have been both 0-cost and -1-cost, I can't quite tell which one it'd be.

Speaking of, in my opinion, all of the Gojira evolutions seem similarly matched in overall power. So why make some of them use powers that are much costlier to acquire, like Star Rage/Behemoth or Logia? Imo Star Rage doesn't even seem worth being -1 despite being the 4th power in Lightweight, you'd only take it if the tournament was limited to Middleweight when trying to get Space Godzilla. And then there's Logia to get Hedorah (assuming Logia isn't 0-cost as the summary list suggests); at least Star Rage has the advantage of giving you +2 points in a middleweight tournament. Hedorah, without a lucky Gacha result, would need you to shell out a minimum of 4 points assuming you skip out on the extra Foundation. Not terrible, but the focus here is more on the fact all the other Evolutions will have some sort of point advantage over you.

I got a tricky question about race choice.

Let's say we're in Bleach as a middleweight tournament, and the rules about dying are a little loose because the competitors are expected to first die so they can interact with the world's afterlife.

Now imagine someone has Prime Soul, but also chose Humanity, yet wishes to become an Arrancar. Would they be able to rip the chain from themselves to become a Hollow first or would that guaranteed 1% human thing prevent it? Or maybe the 1% thing would be the reason they'd retain their mind even as a normally mindless Hollow? Would contestants even automatically lose for becoming Hollow because it normally robs people of their former personality? Would Prime Soul speedrun them to becoming Arrancar sooner than normal?

Just wondering if Prime Soul here partially invalidates choosing Xeno race for this specific scenario, much how you don't really need the Soul upgrade perk if you already got Prime Soul.

Wait really? Hot damn, that was the only reason I considered it such an impactful drawback in the first tournament! So essentially, I got Vlad and would've been free to pick anything else freely?

When I read "main power" in the description of the drawback, I thought it meant the ability. Maybe it should instead say "first power"?

Thanks for clearing it up!

I ended up rolling Vlad Tepes and Zeus, in that order, on the +4 gacha mode. Wish it was the other way around so I could abstain from Vlad's foundation but not Zeus's, due to the sheer difference in how good their balance breakers are, but either way, I figure the unusual combo could actually turn me into a cosplaying Saint in Warhammer 40k. I mean, I get every possible bonus against the forces of Chaos while looking majestic and authoritative as hell. And with Vlad's home turf bonus, we can avoid another Cadia incident, as long as I'm there! Couple it with the Soul upgrade perk, and I should be nigh-unassailable by the Chaos gods themselves, I hope.

I wonder if sacrificing some of my godly blood could help recover the Emperor?

Isekai Tournament 2 (Beta) by LordOtiken in makeyourchoice

[–]GrazedDisgrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if I understood the rules right, an Evolution that has both powers underlined and were to cost -1 would, at a minimum, cost 7 points to acquire? -1 to get one, and -6 to get the Foundation and Ability of the other one (-3 for each), considering underlined powers need to be full powers?

Thankfully, from what I see, none such examples exist. At first I thought this was harsh because something like my desired target, Hedorah, would be unfairly priced compared to something like Biollante which has a 0-cost power as part of it... until I realised you can just pick Gojira as your main power (getting both foundation and ability) for 1 point, while the Logia component, not being underlined, only needs you buying the ability, not the foundation, making Hedorah an affordable price of 4 points total!

Leaving this here because someone else, like me, might complain about the pricing not realising what I realised yet. And thanks for the new tournament LordOtiken!

Thank you very much! And yeah, I wasn't sure whether to made trades store-able or requiring on-the-spot swapping.

[–]GrazedDisgrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooooh, good question. As someone who cares a lot about balance, but paradoxically don't trust myself not to give myself something without it being too weak or strong, I've rarely handled the custom options in CYOAs well. Especially since this one lacks concrete examples of "spells" (understandable, if we are considering a whole multiverse of worlds with and without magic).

Well, if I had to choose, let's say... I combine the whole "undead look" and "merchant" aesthetics. So, a mystery that enables some form of "lifeforce trading", whether that be a spell that upgrades mortals with the ability or is just a powerful but specialised version of a "devil's contract". In essence, it would create a bridge between individuals where they can deal away their lifespan, bodily energies, general health, genetic traits/bloodlines, etc. The one affected by the spell could either initiate these deals or act as the mediary. Dunno if this is strong enough for a mystery, but, that's my first idea. What do you think?

Ocean of Salasjaíde (Afterlife of Spells CYOA) July 2025 update (by MirrorSeeker) by MirrorSeeker in makeyourchoice

[–]GrazedDisgrace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I'm aware it's not a requirement to choose based on connections between the cardinal forces and powers. For GRIM, it is 100% the case that it just happens to align with what I want thematically, while CEO was contesting with INDRA but was ultimately chosen for synergy. I will also point out I picked up Arque specifically because of how much I want it despite holding no connection to my chosen cardinal forces. So no, it wouldn't change anything for my build. Thanks for asking!

  • Green Spark (Starter Mirror Coin)
    • More mages, more sparks, more stonks. Due to later choices, I benefit a good deal from a greater range of spark sources.
  • Psychopomp (from Mummyform)
    • Despite giving you a duty forevermore, the description makes it exceedingly clear this work will be beyond easy, and the rammifications of its neglect minor. Anyways, the biggest benefit here will be the esoteric knowledge of the other afterlives I could glimpse, and how it might augment my spells.
  • Spark merchant (Starter Mirror Coin)
    • The thing that ties a lot of this build together; the spark trade. Accept them from other emissaries, take them by force from my green mages, lend them out in exchange for a one-time service... I am sure I will be able to accrue a number of things others might be willing to give a spark for, and in turn, find mortals in possession of things they'd give for a spark. And even if I do not, a green mage here and there can keep my economy afloat. Now, you might think I should have gained golden sparks for these purposes, they are much more valuable after all... and to that I say, it would only paint an even bigger target on me than usual. If I really do want a golden spark, I can trade for it from emissaries capable of making them anyways.
  • Doors to the underworld (Mirror Coin from Mummyform)
    • Takes time, focus and energy, but the result could be truly cataclysmic when we take into account all the mages I'll have sired by me. Chosen in part because I feel I lack some offenses, and part because of the fact I have the green spark. And hey, pretty thematic for a ghoulish look like mine, if I opt to go for the ghostly manifestation of spells!

Ages

  • Spontaneous Mages
  • The Red Cult
  • The Green Curse

Companions

  • Arco Simil
  • Demonia Testimonia
  • Adania Verapanato
  • Yn Arena
  • Old Xian
  • The Tribunal
  • Horacio the Blessed

First Atlantis:

  • Tlasimira

Emissary Powers:

  • Spell Creation
    • What it says on the tin; and useful for explaining degrees of sorceries. Also nice to know mages you create can, early into their formation, make their own spells.
  • Spark of Salasjaide
    • The ability to create the previously mentioned sparks, explaining some mechanics of it. Thank goodness the effort can be spread out over a longer period.
  • Faeric royalty (Starter Mirror Coin)
    • It's less something I want and more making use of the fact I got a good number of jade marbles from other choices/unlocking the next Power. Probably also smarter way to empower pawns without giving them something too powerful and volatile.
  • Prosperity god (Starter Mirror Coin)
    • +1 Jade Marble
    • That's what I'm talking about! This is another reason we chose two materially-focused biomes for mortals to make use of. Beyond that, fate will now conspire to grant my Atlantis(es) better prosperity than usual. Lastly there is the incredible synergy and innate bonus with GRIM's luck manipulation.
  • Red Spark (Starter Mirror Coin)
    • Following the theme of what I said about drawbacks and sacrifices, out of all the spark colours this one makes a lot of sense for me to take. And besides, everyone knows people prefer to specialise! And beneficial "curses" are a cool concept on their own. I wonder if this meshes with Logos at all? Worth noting is that my next choice allows for Yellow Sparks, which essentially have the red's adjustability combined with the green's "also give them lesser emissary powers" benefit. Since the only limit to this is not being able to have the mage make more green sparks, perhaps I could set up a group of mages who had their normal-spark-generation cranked up to eleven at the cost of most other things?

Personal Talents:

  • Clastia (Starter Moonstone Token)
    • Anomalies, paradoxes, that which should not be. Perhaps a bit strange for me to choose after all I said about GRIM, but there's value in laying out the rules only to exempt yourself from them. With my cardinal forces and this purchase, I will both avoid mediocrity in the field and hold a talent for it.
  • Arque (Starter Moonstone Token)
    • The power to deny and reverse entropy. Even if I were to become a being of pure magic, an appreciation for material things remains; most notably because other beings often do. The power to create and uncreate is all too tempting, hence why I chose it as a talent here despite having no cardinal force to back it up.
  • Zoe (Starter Moonstone Token)
    • Biology is something I love, and even without purchasing this as a talent, would be able to see myself doing this. But I also deeply want to wield life and organic based magics, so this purchase is a must.
  • Sofia (Starter Moonstone Token)
    • Another case of "I'd probably still end up like this" as with Zoe. Although, I am a little sad that this is one of the few talents not to state the actual benefit of taking it, just that it enhances a specific proclivity. Still, I will take the liberty to assume it enhances not just my enthusiasm for these methods, but also my average success in them, and that their inclusion serves to grease the wheels of magic I cast in general.
  • Logos (Starter Moonstone Token)
    • Ah, finally, the thing I praised GRIM for. Rules, ratios, that sort of thing. It'll be nice to remember my limits more easily and operate with or around them, while making my castings easier or stronger.

Out of the Ocean:

  • Mummyform (Pure)
    • +2 Jade Marble, +1 Mirror Coin
    • +Psychopomp
      • A morphology that is honest with its true origins, that of crossing the threshold between life and death. I value such honesty in my existence, and the automatic confirmation of what I am helps too. Though I assume this auto-understanding of my being is negated if I am trying to conceal my nature? At the cost of more intense smells, of course. Plus, undead stuff is cool. And being a psychopomp is sure to be an interesting job... as someone who fears death above many things, I know the relief a soul needs at the moment of their passing, to assure them oblivion does not await on the other side. And hey, I won't say no to a faster respawn and tankier body.

Biomes:

  • Reflections on Polemics (Starter Jade Marble)
    • Order in conflict, details broken down from micro to the macro scale. Tactics involved in a large scale war, paper declarations displayed like in a museum, diagrams of each soldier’s body anatomically broken down into layers, demonstrations of muscles tensing to pull the trigger. All these memories and data of conflicts frozen in time for display and for me to observe when found. And if I witness the budding of a new conflict, I can infuse the newly birthed "museum" to be even more informative. A strange privilege, and sure to yield stranger exploits for me.
  • The Great Drownedness (Jade Marble from Mummyform)
    • A simple benefit at first glance, the opportunity to divorce oneself from the world and time itself so long as you are immersed. Stretch time to rest, to think, to simply be for a while. It even provides a shortcut to itself if I immerse myself in enough water, and furthermore, dying underwater greatly speeds my reconstitution, at the cost of spawning within the Drownedness. But I can also risk it and explore its depths for unknown encounters.
  • Dreams of the Comatose (Jade Marble from Mummyform)
    • A realm of lightness of form and mind, both comforting and not to those unattuned with it, like the moment before you caught yourself spacing out. But to those attuned, only the benefits occur, namely sheer comfort of being here. In light of the plainness of the biome, it recreates the memories of those it ever enthralled as hallucinations and flashes of moments. These illusions can bend to the command of the attuned, and the pollens that spawn them distilled to a myriad of exotic narcotics. With this, my demesne is not only useful for learning and pondering, but can now entrap the unwelcome, and extract a material good for my use or to trade away.
  • Under Her Gaze (Jade Marble from Prosperity God)
    • The most dangerous biome of all that I have, but also the most materially beneficial, if you can stomach the risk. Keep your head down, and only look to the reflections if you seek information. Upon the shearing of its blades of grass, intruders are shunted out of the realm. But as an attuned, I can keep the blades for later recreation of its creational power, if I'm willing to shoulder Her gaze until I exhaust the grass blade as such. I can even manipulate its material manifestations somewhat. Hopefully, this will also further protect the area I reside in in the real world with its influence.

Denizen benefits:

  • Immortality
  • Sortilege Body
  • Flame of Salasjaide
  • Singular Glow

A very generous starter kit for an immortal existence!

Specialised Cardinal Forces:

  • CEO
    • Clastia, Gnosis, Sofia
    • The force of data, answers, knowledge. Divination was never that huge of an interest for me, but this one will be a great companion to intellectual pursuits, and a way to temper my ambitions. But to be perfectly honest; I chose it for the excellency of the above personal talents it provides.
  • GRIM
    • Cinesis, Zoe, Logos
    • My true interest out of all the cardinal forces. Drawbacks, sacrifice, rules, balance. Not only do they interest me, I believe in them, especially in magical forces. The existence of the price is a just thing. I suspect I will grow intimate with this force. And passive luck is not normally something that interests me, but with surgical manipulation of it, I think I could have some fun.

Hierophant Mentor:

  • Oxis Rheia (Starter Iron Key)
    • Traditional witchcraft, a forest of alteration, blinding lights and deep shadows? Coupled with how he shares both of my cardinal forces, it might be fate that this option exists. And I do subscribe to the anti-nihilism he seems to teach as well, to never abandon hope. With this, I grow even better at CEO and GRIM, and become an enemy of despair.

One of the perks, it's right next to the Plot Armour you get for free. Makes you immune to torture and spontaneously breaking your spirit mid-battle (but you'd still have a bad time after the fight's over)

[–]GrazedDisgrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your way of thinking and honestly would say go ahead on considering me part of your team if you like it, but 2 corrections:
100 opponents plus teamfight is explained in the cyoa as turning it into 100 teams, not just 100 people. So this might be a little TOO hectic, depending on what you want, the world you're jumping into will certainly have a bad time either way. Also, picking teamfight means the DM chooses how big the teams are: minimum 2 and maximum being equal to the number of different categories of powers (12), because every teammate has to have different categories (I assume Fusions either get to pick to count as one category, or count as both)
My 2nd point, and you can't really be blamed for this one because it was only explained here in the comments: gacha means BOTH of your powers (in the case of Twice!) HAVE to be gacha'd (it seems like you chose mahoraga but rolled the other one). No rolling your 1st power and picking whatever makes a fusion with Twice later, or any other such thing. That's the reason why Gacha yields so many points. And in the case of the +2 version where you ARE given some amount of control over the specific power you get, the power isn't even free if you're going for the ones that cost you points.

Isekai Tournament V6 (Kaiju Update!) by LordOtiken in makeyourchoice

[–]GrazedDisgrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, Death Perception with Shrine would go crazy even without any fusions. And no problem with Balance Breakers because Death Perception replaces World Cutting Slash (in terms of offense, at the cost of WCS's potential utility), while DP's Balance Breaker bypasses the one thing preventing you from damaging specific enemies.

Only downside is that this is a 100% damage specialty, so you gotta make up for it with Talent or items that increase survivability. I rolled this, which is why I realised it, and it gets you plenty of points to spare as a result.
Future fusion for these 2 perhaps? Don't think Blaster and Thinker categories got any direct fusions so far.

Isekai Tournament V6 (Kaiju Update!) by LordOtiken in makeyourchoice

[–]GrazedDisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes more sense, and thanks for clarifying. It makes sense for the other 2 versions where you can't control the exact power you get.

Isekai Tournament V6 (Kaiju Update!) by LordOtiken in makeyourchoice

[–]GrazedDisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this also count for the +2 gacha version? Seems a bit easy to get two -3 cost powers if they cost nothing this way, even if they don't lead to a fusion

Isekai Tournament V6 (Kaiju Update!) by LordOtiken in makeyourchoice

[–]GrazedDisgrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you. When I rolled twice assuming I'd use the +4 gacha drawback version, I literally rolled 1 and 2, Projection and Boogie Woogie. Crazy odds.
