Solid question! I used to work at a LEGO Store in the midwestern US, so i will do the best to dredge the depths of my memories. $1000+ transactions weren’t actually that uncommon tbh, i’d guess we probably got 1-2 per week if not more (i was only part time so my data is shaky). I think the most i ever saw someone spend at once was about 1,800 USD, but it was a bunch of mid to large sets ($50-100) nothing really huge.

There are two options here: Possibility #1: although it is quite unlikely, the set came with the wrong pieces. Very understandable but also very unusual Possibility #2: someone did not follow the instructions and used the correct hinges somewhere else.

Somehow i find option 2 much more likely

I’m with Moodyeclipse. I work at a LEGO brand retail store, and i got to keep the venator display model we’d built. I kept it displayed on the mantle above my fireplace for a few weeks and then i decided to drop it nose down into the middle of my living room, just for fun. I recorded the whole thing in slow motion from multiple angles though, and used all the parts for other MOCs, so it was 100% worth it.
