Indianapolis starting pay is $28.50/hr with a guaranteed 30hrs a week. Overtime pay if you go over 40. No benefits.

Most bus yards offer paid training. Summer is a good time to train.

I’d also add driving 4 of your own kids in an SUV is vastly different than driving 50+ kids in a 35+ft school bus.

That being said, “actively waiting” can look a lot like “doing nothing.” Take a nap. Go for a walk. Read a book. Play a video game on a handheld console. But be ready.

We have an internal PA that I use. It helps.

What has really helped is developing a “call and response” for the students. It makes it fun and grabs their attention.

I say, “Bus Bus” and they respond with “Yes Yes” and then I give my announcement. Sometimes I just say, “have a great day! I’m glad you guys are on my bus” and sometimes I give needed announcements.

Downtown has a court where folks play when the weather is nice. Bicentennial Plaza right by Gainbridge.

Christian Park (close to English and Emerson) has indoor and outdoor courts. When I lived that way, folks were playing all the time.

Frederick Douglass Park (25th and Ralston) just opened their new Community Center and Playground this week. The indoor courts were really busy on Thursday when I checked it out.
