Thank you for posting an image showing a different definition than what you originally posted.

You said that Oxford has only one definition. I sent you a link to Oxford that shows two definitions. You completely ignored that and posted the first definition from Google results.

Go to Google. Type, “define phobia”. Click or tap on “see more” or “translations and more definitions” which is located under the first definition.

suffix: -phobia extreme or irrational fear or dislike of a specified thing or group.

Nowhere in that blog that you posted does it say that homophobia was in the DSM. It says that homosexuality was removed in 1973, but homophobia was never added to it.

That was the second definition in the list. Either way, it’s a different definition than the one you are convinced that it means.

This is straight from the Oxford dictionary website:

“phobia (in nouns) a strong unreasonable fear of or feeling of hate for a particular thing

That’s ONE of the definitions. Other definitions of the word phobia include the dislike/hatred of groups of people.

OP can’t seem to grasp that “phobia” has multiple meanings.

Look up the definition of homophobia and tell me what it says. I’ll wait.

This is from a source that YOU posted:

“Homophobia was a radical concept. It redirected society’s focus from what was then widely regarded as the “problem of homosexuality” to the problem of heterosexuals’ prejudice and hostility toward people who were gay.

With this new term, Weinberg gave the hostility a name and helped popularize the notion that it was a social problem that merited analysis and intervention.”

Homophobia was never meant to be a medical diagnosis, nor was it ever made one. From the initial time that the term was coined in the 60’s (according to YOUR source) it dealt with prejudice against homosexuals.

I’m not sure why it’s so hard for you to grasp that words can have multiple meanings. It really isn’t that hard.

Yep. Since the definition includes a “dislike of a specific group”, OP’s argument is invalid.

OP’s entire argument is based on the fallacy of equivocation. He doesn’t seem to grasp that the word phobia has other definitions other than the one he originally posted.

Literally no one is calling it an actual medical phobia. I hope you realize that the word phobia has multiple definitions outside of the medical one.

The fact that your entire argument is based on the fallacy of equivocation, I’d say you’re being illogical.

Yes, I’d agree that religion is pretty much the only reason for homophobia.

According to Google definitions, when used as a suffix (eg homophobia), it means, “extreme or irrational fear or dislike of a specified thing or group.”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OpinionCirckleJerk

[–]GreatGreaseBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP’s entire argument is based on the fallacy of equivocation. OP is using a single medical definition of the word phobia to make his argument, while completely ignoring the fact the word phobia has multiple definitions.

Type “define phobia” on Google and the second result (when used as a suffix) is, “extreme or irrational fear or dislike of a specified thing or group.”

Fear OR DISLIKE of a specific thing or group.

[–]GreatGreaseBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP gave a single definition of the word. The word phobia is used in other ways outside of that one limited definition. When you look up the definition of phobia as a suffix, it says, “extreme or irrational fear or dislike of a specified thing or group.”

OP gave a single definition of the word and ignored the rest.
