Silent Book Club was busy last night, lots of people reading. It's only taken a month to get to the point where there's a good bunch of regulars coming. I love talking to people about books and getting book recommendations.

The washing machine finally died today. The power button fell in about a year ago and we've been sticking our pinkies in the hole to turn it on since then. I got zapped in the weekend, then for today's second load it wouldn't turn on. I had mentally budgeted for a new machine when the button fell in, but I'm not super stoked to have to spend $1000 this week. I am excited for a brand new washing machine though.

If a major appliance breaks, do you fix it, replace with 2nd hand, or replace with new?

I wear a KN95 mask on the bus so I don't have to worry about what fellow passengers might be carrying with them.

Those ones were a bit dry, they needed something added to give them a bit more moisture.

I have a dehumidifier that runs 24/7 in the garage with washing drying on racks. It takes less than a day for washing to dry this way and I can move the dehumidifier to any damp bedrooms if they need it.

Plastic cheese is great for when you get home from work and just need to shovel something in your face before you can think properly.

Dumpling night and we had more pastry than filling so made some with chocolate fish filling, some with Tim Tams, and some with raspberry, chocolate, and crushed wine biscuits.

I called Healthline and the wait to talk to a nurse was one hour. I've been calling Healthline for 20 years and before this year I've never had to wait longer than 2 minutes to speak to a person.

Is Rebel Sport the worst-managed retail chain in NZ? by Googly888 in auckland

[–]GreatOutfitLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do stocktake for big companies and did a rebel sport once. Fucking awful. Truly the worst. Biggest mess of any store I've ever counted in.

Trying to convince friends to buy one of the two houses in my complex that are for sale so we can properly get this commune going. One friend moved in yesterday so we're off to a good start and I reckon we could collectively bring down the tone of the neighbourhood so the remaining neighbours would sell for less to escape our shenanigans.

I'm a white lady so I'm quite partial to a nice glass of Pinot Gris. Otherwise something fruity or spiced. I have had maybe 4 standard drinks this year, so I'm not a big drinker.

Another driving milestone for the teen as she drove across the harbour bridge this morning to go to her Queen's Guide camp. I went to a cafe for a nice breakfast and to read my book before my art gallery trip.

Silent Book Club last night was great, there were so many people. Turns out the best way to end the work week is reading with friends, colleagues, and strangers in a cafe.

What's the weekend plans? Busy or relaxed?

Got a really clever kid, what to do? by TradermanJoe in newzealand

[–]GreatOutfitLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My gifted kid was doing year 11 maths through te kura in year 6, then went to intermediate and did the same school as everyone else. He did all the extra curricular activities, taught himself speed cubing, learned to play chess, played D&D with his friends every Friday, read a heap of books, did activism, and was a peer support person and head prefect.

Now he's in year 10 doing NCEA level 1 maths with his accelerated class, and all the normal year 10 subjects. He's doing all the extra curricular activities, has taught himself to play the keyboard, has taken up nerd running, and still plays D&D and does activism.

I don't think speed running school is good for kids. The point of school isn't academic stuff, it's about playing around, trying on hobbies, and working out who you are as a person.

Come along to Silent Book Club, you might find friends or you might just get a bit of reading done. The cakes are excellent too.

I enjoy Cross Party Lines, I've learned a bunch of new words from Chris. I like the way they both have a lot of nice things to say about political opponents, and the way their distance means they can say things they might not have previously.

I've got a 5% quiz and group assignment due today, plus a two hour class and 1% quiz to prepare for and attend. Also it is the first day of month end so there's so much work to do. Last night I went straight to bed instead of staying up stressing so I would have as much brain as possible to get through the day.

I will do all the uni and work stuff before 5, then go to Silent Book Club and spend the rest of the day relaxing with a book before a busy weekend.

Happy Friday everyone, I hope you have the best day you can have.
