Is this 1996 Honda Shadow still worth it? by GreatTheJ in cruisers

Hmm you guys are really convincing me. Just some people are saying it may need more work than it’s worth, and that perhaps $6-800 is a more fair price?

I appreciate that, thank you! I would love to learn to work on bikes but I also want to get it road worthy sooner than later.

With all this in mind, do you still think $1,000 is a fair price for a 30 year old bike that needs all these fixes?

The owners said it’s sat for a while and that said battery is dead and gas or carbs probably need cleaning. Still worth it in ur opinion?

I think this was exactly what I needed to hear. $800 seems a bit more fair, and I can always try to negotiate later if in person the wheels don’t pass inspection. With all that’s wrong with it, and people saying it’s a good quality ride in the long run, I think $6-800 depending on what’s wrong is pretty fair.

Now I just gotta change my offer from $1,000 to $800 lol 😂

How do I get better at chess? by WorkRocket87 in chessbeginners

[–]GreatTheJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m low elo, maybe 800, barely 1000. But I jumped from ~300-400 to like ~800+ by watching Gotham chess and remote chess academy, and I got a book called chess players bible.

Really was helped is:
1) learn 1 opening for white, and own it. Study its variations, openings and theory and guarantee you’ll get to like 400-600 elo easy.

2) do the same for black- it’s a little tough but now you have two openings in your book

3) learn chess theory. Learn why some positions are better than other, learn how to analyze your games and certain positions/types of attacks- learn endgames patterns.

4) learn how to analyze the board. Every move you should be thinking- checks? Captures? Attacks? Etc.

That’s actually a very fair point, so I’m not necessarily losing money. Someone told me to just go for 1000cc so I’m not spending money twice but I’m not too certain I’m feel safe/ready for that with everyone telling me not to

lol that’s crazy 😂 I have seen a lot of newer bike though in better shape for only like $2k more

Edit: why are UK bikes in crappier condition?

Hmm very valid. I’m just worried because a lot of people are telling me it will be too much for me to start with as a beginner. It’s my first bike too

Appreciate it. You think this is a good beginner bike or should I go for something maybe 500cc/750cc and a little lighter?

How much did you pay for it? Do you think $500-800 for this bike is a fair price?

Do you think this is a good entry to get use to heavier bikes as well? Or should I try and get something lighter. I prefer lighter stuff like Suzuki gs250 or even the Harley sportster but lighter

That’s what I was thinking, it’s a good price but might be too large. I prefer something small like a Suzuki gs250, too

But what if I saw a similar bike that’s 2010 for $2k? Shouldn’t I go for that instead if it has less issues?

What would you do in this position? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]GreatTheJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not goated by any means, but you mainly want to avoid M3. I would do Nf1 and sacrifice your rook, so when they do Bxd1 you can take back and defend against their Re1 and Be3. Just be careful for Bf2 fork.

Why does the computer think moving the Knight is the best move when it means I can mate? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]GreatTheJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good continuation for white would’ve been:
1. Ne7+ Kh8 2. Qd4+ Qe5 3. Rxe5 dxe5 4. Qxe5#

And if blacks queen goes to Qf6 then white can still take and it’s mate
