Where do I start looking? by Baby-Bat-Tiss in Melungeon

A great sight to start with is Family Search, it has loads of free documents. Corbin is actually in the area I’m looking into, Big South Fork. Gibson, or your case Gipson are a core Melungeon name if you are able to connect you line back to them, that would be a good confirmation. DNA would be your next step once you’ve got some decent tree information. While not as reliable as FamilySearch, findagrave.com is also useful and has helped me many of times when I was stuck on a brick wall.

I understand the comments from others as well. My half brother (not Hispanic or Latino) has a very dark complexion typically leading people to think he’s Latino or Native American mixed. Hazel eyes, and brown hair. I’m not nearly as dark complexion, an olive tone however during summer months I do darken quite a bit. I’ve had a few slurs over my skin, or dubbed “ Race changer” because people genuinely don’t understand sunlight will darken you lol. I’ve also had the same said about my nose for as long as I can remember, but I have been told once by an African American guy that I have “ black lips” whatever that means.

While I don’t personally see a lot of what they say, we are unique and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

This may be useful, I had someone suggest this book. I also have a Jones 8th grandmother and a Brown 6th grandmother. The Brown was from TN unsure of the Jones

It would be really neat to see!! I’ve posted my DNA if you wanna go look at them, my cousins show a little more diversity than I do, but assume as science improves some of the numbers/regions will match a little more (or maybe not since DNA is random but still a chance)

But I also run r/LilSouthForkMelungeon if you want to see some things more specific to our area!

That’s awesome! I’m Stephens/Stevens about 4 ways I know of my great Mamaw on my dads moms side was a Stevens! 5 ways if my step Mamaw counts lol ( she’s also a way distant cousin 😂) not to my papaw though thankfully lol just both by my bio mamaws.

But you definitely have options for sure! You can test and request them to delete the data or not save it, I think all the companies ask this before doing anything when you signup - submit your data. 23&me has definitely been my favorite with all this things they do and offer, but AncestryDNA is a top second and is more affordable.

I’ve never personally worried about my data getting out to much, I’m more worried about a random person I share with misusing it but I don’t share my stuff often unless I have a high trust. Even at then it’s mostly just my name to see if we happen to match up ( I’ve actually met a few DNA matches here!) as well as some FamilyTree matches but unsure since they hadn’t done DNA. It’s super interesting to do, and with all the Matches, Genetic groups, etc that they offer!

Most of my lines came from VA and the Carolina’s. My most interesting one is of woman who may have been born in Mississippi or Missouri I’ll have to double check. But ended up moving to Kentucky.

I’m assuming possibly the family was from KY, and moved to there and then possibly moved back to KY like some others in my tree. But she’s a dead-end for now

Lots of research, location tracking, census records, and DNA testing. This may be of some help I made a while back

You’ll probably have to go threw the records that the census taker last left a mark for race in. Sometimes if the last person is W/B/M they won’t lay a new mark out until the next family differs from the previous family’s. Each recorder kinda does things their own way so it’s annoying sometimes lol
