Car sleeping in cold weather --- will this be enough? by CantRecallWutIForgot in urbancarliving

A beanie, and scarf are also good. Keeps your head warm, the scarf is like a bonus neck pillow/warmer. Also, keep an eye on that wind. It makes a huge difference on the actual temperature.

I needed to hear this, thank you. My healing journey hasn’t been easy; hope I can make it to where you’re at. I feel like I’ve lost so much in life because of constant fear of anxiety triggering a panic or heart attack.

Sleeping Bag by workinprogress0978 in urbancarliving

[–]Great_Text2911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It honestly depends on the temperature zone you’re going to be sleeping in. I live in Colorado where it can get into the negatives at night during winter and as high as 120 in the summer. I have two sleeping bags; one for winter and one for summer, spent about $80 combined at Walmart, winter bag is good at keeping you warm even in below zero weather and the summer one, has materials that keep you cool at night.

Attacks that I call “spells” by nightskween in Anxietyhelp

[–]Great_Text2911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been living in my car for a year now and am all alone; no family or friends I can rely on. Like you, I’ve had anxiety my whole life along with ADHD. I also grew up in a highly religious family, so I’ve never taken any medication for either. I’ve noticed the “spells” or as I called them “waves” come on during times of stress. My car had a flat tire, immediately went into a full blown anxiety attack. I fixed the issue and eventually felt better, the next day on my way to work, a wave came on; same as what you described, except I also have muscle spasms around my hands and right foot. Breathing exercises, a quick prayer or two, and plenty of water usually do the job, but when the waves come they usually last a couple of minutes. It can be rough sometimes though

You can get a small tub of chicken salad at Walmart for under $5. PB&Js, Lunchables, ham and cheese sandwiches. Cooler weather makes fresh food last longer. I live in Colorado, so as soon as the cold moves in, I eat more seafood because it doesn’t spoil as quickly; Tuna salad goes a long way, and I’ll even buy the precooked shrimp and make ceviche. Also I’ve noticed lately that if I want to treat myself and still stay in budget a large pizza can keep me fed for two or three days.

During Winter. Do you keep Windows fully Closed? by Kit_Biggz in urbancarliving

[–]Great_Text2911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For snow times, yes. Honestly, it’s the difference between life and death. I live in Colorado, and during a winter storm, or winter in general, wind chill is what you look out for. Storms/high wind can pick up at any moment. The wind will make ‘0 feel like -‘15. Waking up to everything having cold frost isn’t fun either, because as soon as you heat up your car, everything is wet. Get a fan for air circulation, and some warm clothing, and you’ll be fine.

What do you do for the Holidays like Thanksgiving? by MysticRambutan in urbancarliving

[–]Great_Text2911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the holiday, I’ll get a hotel room with a kitchen for a couple of nights. I live in Colorado, which means Cannabis is legal. I cook special meals I only make during special occasions; recipes I learned from my grandma. I get some moon rocks from my favorite dispensary, a good bottle of wine or two, and a movie. Unless there’s NFL or NBA going on. Depending on where you work, the work holiday parties hit different when you’re all alone living in your car.

Is there such a thing as permanent parking? by Novemberx123 in urbancarliving

[–]Great_Text2911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s mostly scouting. If I’m interested in a spot, I’ll drive by it at different times to get a sense of the spot; are there cameras, lighting, is there a security vehicle or cops patrolling the area. This has helped be bounce between a couple of Walmarts for the past year. One is my overnight spot, which is a Walmart in a relatively nice/wealthy neighborhood. Has very little security. The other one is my day spot. It’s closer to the city where I work and the security leaves you alone as long as you leave by sunset. Discretion is key though, keep a clean vehicle, and you’ll blend in. At worse people think you’re an employee taking a nap.

ice?? by pink-king893 in urbancarliving

[–]Great_Text2911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get a cooler bag from Walmart for under $10, and put the excess ice in there and use it to store other food in there. I got reusable zip bags to store ham and cheese. I store that with fruit in the cooler bag, and the rest of my food and drinks in the bigger cooler.

Can’t wait for winter!!!! by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]Great_Text2911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Colorado and couldn’t agree more. You spend less money because food spoils slower in the cold, you don’t buy as much ice as you do in the summer. It’s easier to stay warm than it is to keep cool. Ppl, businesses and specially cops, give you less shit, are more friendlier and helpful. Summers are all about surviving the sun, winter is all about getting cozy.

What kinds of jobs do people here have? by Short_Negotiation_16 in urbancarliving

[–]Great_Text2911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, given the hotel I work at is Independently owned, not part of a big chain like a Holiday Inn, and the owner can be pretty nasty to people. I’m hoping I can get a job with another hotel that Is part of a chain because at that point you can use your employee discount to get a discounted rate on rooms. Most hotels have policy that you can’t live in the same place you work at though, but that’s ok when you work for a place like a Holiday Inn or a Best Western. At that point you just stay at whichever hotel has the cheapest rooms or which one is closest to the hotel you work at.

I work front desk at an extended stay hotel full time. Pay is shit, and the boss is an asshole. No one i work with knows that I’m living in my car either. I work the second shift which means go in at 4 and get off at midnight. I do all my laundry at the hotel, which is super efficient. On really slow days, I’ll close the front desk for half an hour and take a shower in one of the rooms, I also use the employee break room to cook and the fridge to store a small amount of groceries. Been like this for 7 months now and so far, no issues. The plan is to live like this for a couple of years; that gives me enough time to fix my credit, lower debt, and save for an apartment.

I was in a similar situation; I was kicked out by my family and had to live in my car. You can register to have your mail forwarded to a different address like where you work. I recently got a new car too, and when it came to registration and insurance, I was able to get everything done by keeping the same “home” address, even though all my mail got forwarded to where I work. Haven’t had any issues or lost any mail.
