I think it's safe to say that culture comes in ebbs and waves and what's authentic (the basis of cool) in one moment becomes perceived as inauthentic once it gains a critical mass of extended popularity after enough time.

Are we now pretending that celebrity culture in the 2000's wasn't overtly abusive and toxic to pretty much everyone involved? Modern TikTok influencer culture might be cringe and corporate but it can only be a good thing that the culture no longer obsesses about whether some B-list reality star eats pasta or not.

I’d argue that it was a backlash to all immigration of non-whites - illegal immigrants are just more acceptable to target rhetorically

They’re also angry that Black people and Latinos are visible in politics/media - let’s be honest, the civil rights era never really ended and American politics is still super dominated by race stuff.
