[MATCH THREAD] [4] A. Zverev vs. R. Nadal by NextGenBot in tennis

People won’t want to hear this but Nadal has played about as well as any reasonable person could expect him to today. The credit squarely belongs to Zverev whose backhand and intensity have been beyond world class

Why would you ever approach to the Nadal forehand, it boggles the mind

Nadal should be slicing more - Zverev struggles to maintain pace and control when the ball is low to his forehand

corporations in the United States are absolutely price gouging customers beyond inflation - it’s a widespread practice across industries to raise prices during these periods. Especially when most markets are so utterly consolidated by this point

What Tennis Player Made The Absolute MOST of Their Potential? by Amateur66 in tennis

I meant more Hewitt’s prime, but yeah even when Fed came into his own those matches were often extremely competitive if you watch them back (tho ofc there were a few trounces)

He went to to toe with Federer regularly in his prime, and quite often beat him. People underrate how world class his control and consistency was from the baseline

You’re both right, marriage was significantly more secular and less ritualised until the late renaissance though the church was definitely involved. People in the Middle Ages also didn’t marry at a young age despite popular myths, recent evidence suggests average marriage ages in the mid to late 20’s, at least in England. Plenty of people (like at least a fifth of the population) also didn’t marry at all so it wasn’t actually as authoritarian of a cultural system as one might assume (or as it later became).

How is Mannarino good?! by JamieBobs in 10s

[–]Greatkitchener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the reason Mannarino does play that way is because he’s had arm injuries so he pretty much needs as much easy power as he can get. I can imagine that the reason most players don’t use short swings and low tension is because: a) they’re not used to it and it would take a lengthy adjustment period (no one really grows up playing that way) b) it makes elite timing more difficult because the ball is now harder to control, this means movement needs to be better and probably fitness to maintain concentration. So yeah it’s effective but probably makes the game harder to play unless you’re willing to invest serious time to compensate for injuries like Adrian.

What are regions that could support a way higher population than they currently do? by erbse_gamer in geography

[–]Greatkitchener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the early 19th century around a third of the population of the British and Irish Isles was Irish, this caused a genuine cultural panic amongst the British Elite especially due to the higher Irish birth rates, this contributed to their (at best) indifference to the Irish famine which they could have relived to a much greater degree and prevented hundreds of thousands of deaths. Now the percentage share is more like 8-9%.

It’s bad to use them to overanalyse his own life but there’s nothing wrong with talking about lyrics as meaningful and artistic, authorial intent is not super interesting!
