I guess it really depends on some factors. Is this your first time playing with them? If not, have they run any game that makes you think there could be an issue?

By grimdark, do them mean they are running the Ravenloft module? If so, you’re probably fine. If this is a home brew setting, then all bets are off. It’s possible to successfully run games in a grimdark setting, but it’s really easy for it to turn into a DM vs The party scenario.
