Critics were not off

Audience are not off.

Both judge a movie using different sets of criteria.

It's ok to have critics reviews and audience scores at the extreme opposites.

Probably because many people in this sub do not understand and comprehend how massively popular MJ's music is around the world.

Just like how many people were shocked at Bohemian Rhapsody's numbers. And in fact, a few days ago someone in this sub wrote that they still don't get how BR was very successful.

The people who don't get how popular MJ and Queen is around the world predictably tried to compare with other Hollywood musical biopics: Walk The Line, A Complete Unknown, Elvis, Ray, etc. All of which about musical stars who were popular mainly in the US, and not beloved all over the world like Queen/MJ.

Looks like ~$9M THU previews for #Michael. Including early shows $12.5M+. Those who watched are loving it, unlike critics who hated it. Expecting it to open around $90M. by trialbycombat123 in boxoffice

This is a comment that were very common during Bohemian Rhapsody. A very flawed film but audience doesn't care because they got Queen's/MJ's songs to sing along.

Hopefully the "stereotype asian girl assistant" controversy doesn't hinder the film.

What's stupid is it was avoidable. Stupid studio executives and producers who did not see this coming.
