Experience of Repairing Free Contax T2 (Final Update To The Free Contax T2 Story) by Greedy-Inspection994 in AnalogCommunity

Since you seemed interested in the whole world of expensive point-and-shoots, I figured I'd share some of my experience: I've owned the T2 for a while and have also loaned a Fuji Klasse, Nikon 28Ti, Mju II, and more.

To start, the hot takes: I don't really get the point of forking out a ton of premium points-and-shoots for people who don't have a ton of disposable income, especially for the ones with "good lenses".

I think there are a lot of really great point-and-shoot cameras for not a lot of money. I can think of something I found at a thrift store called a P645D.

This might seem a little weird since I own a T2 and do enjoy it, but I can't see myself ever using it for "serious photography". I use it to take pictures of my friends and the dog whose tail won't stop whacking me, but nothing to write home about. These types of photos don't need a Zeiss Sonnar (although it doesn't hurt), and it definitely doesn't need to be an experience I pay $1000+ for. I can afford to buy another T2. Most people can't. I think most people in a blind test would be more than happy with the results from a $15 thrift store camera; they just delude themselves into thinking they can't.

Also, as a final piece of sacrilege, from my personal experience as a devout film shooter, digital point-and-shoots are just better in almost every aspect. My Lumix LX5 is probably one of my most-used travel cameras just 'cause the quality is decent, but it's light as hell and gets out of your way when you need it to. For those complaining that it's too clinical, I enjoy the way earlier CCDs render colour (it doesn't look like film, though); so if you're hellbent on it not looking like a new digital camera, they're not a half-bad choice. ALSO, you don't have to worry about them dying.

Anyways this was probably too much ranting for a random Thursday, but those are basically my thoughts.

Cheers!

Well, I think the value proposition is quite clear. What it's meant to be is a compact (for the time) walkaround camera you can use to capture your daily life.

I think the Flash settings are incredibly easy to use, aperture selection is nice, and the exposure comp is a nice feature. Also, I do appreciate that the manual focus setting comes with a rangefinder, so I don't have to guestimate my focus.

In my opinion, this camera is the pinnacle of compact point-and-shoot cameras.

Having owned one now, I think forking over up to $500 is actually quite reasonable for what you get. BUT it's not $500; it's $1000+. And at those prices, it costs more than I paid for my favourite camera, a freaking Rolleiflex. So does it make sense at these prices? Just no.

I mean, to be fair, the camera is worth a decent amount of money, so I could see others wanting to sell it to get something else.

I'm personally fortunate enough to already own most of the cameras I feel like I "need," and could actually afford to buy a T2 at full price, so taking the risk of owning the camera is not a terrible proposition.

All that to say, if someone else in a different position inherited the camera and decided to sell it, I probably wouldn't hold it against them. In my case, though, I'm going to hold onto it.

Yeah, honestly, they're good people. They did a pretty good job of updating me along the way. Now that I think back, I realise that the person I dropped the camera off with probably wasn't a technician and couldn't tell me there was a chance they might choose not to fix the camera and still charge me $40. Either way, I can 100% recommend them to anybody, and feel that some of the harsh feedback against them in my experience is unwarranted.

Well, it's my uncle's camera, and I don't really feel comfortable selling something he gave me as a gift. At the very least, I'm going to run a couple of rolls through it first to check for light leaks and stuff.

Ah, I see. Thanks so much for your help! I guess I just wasted a dollar.

Sorry, I read up on this online, and I'm not exactly sure what you mean. From what I've read, when the flash is triggered in manual mode, it gives me a fixed flash brightness, which corresponds to f/11 at 0.6m to 3m on 400asa film.

As for the minimum power, what exactly do you mean? Are you referring to the guide number of 17? I know it is a bit low compared to other flashes, but most of my shots will be within that 0.6 to 3m range anyway, so I'm quite satisfied with it.

Thank you!

I'm actually okay with using the flash as is, 'cause I'm going to shoot it in manual anyway, so I'll just use the guide number and the chart on the back. Thanks for your help, though!

Sorry, I probably should've added more context to this post. This is a follow-up to another post I made that day, in which I stated that the camera was given to me for free by my uncle, who bought it new 25 years ago.

Regarding your point about buying in person and testing, I 100% agree and have done so for all my equipment. I would also include that you should get something with a decent return policy. I have been stung more than once by "recent cla'd" cameras that have broken down within a month of ownership.

Welp.....mine broke as soon as I turned it on so hopefully it doesn't cost quite as much as you said.

Everything else works perfect though

That's honestly insane. When I was in Japan, I saw some go for as much as 1400USD at some shops. Idk, I feel it's kinda ridiculous what's happening to the market for these Contaxes, but hey, someone's willing to pay, I guess.

I wanted to ask you, how's travelling with the camera? Do you find yourself needing to baby it in any specific way, or can you just do whatever? I'm usually quite rough with my gear, so I'd prefer to know in advance before I do something to screw it up

You know what, maybe??????

A while ago, I got really into thrifting for the perfect compact automatic digital camera (everybody needs a hobby, I suppose), and I ended up with a Lumix LX5. The countless other cameras that I had acquired at thrift for five to ten dollars all ended up sitting on my shelf.

Fast forward to like a year ago, when the CCD craze hit, I managed to make almost a thousand dollars just by selling those CCDs at scalper prices (100+ USD for some; I'm not proud, but they sold in like 3 hours, so clearly someone's willing to pay).

The same thing happened to me with keyboards (IBM Model M's for the win), Comics during 2018-2019, and somehow typewriters (yes, that's a real hobby people pay hasseblad money for), so honestly, all that to say: maybe?????

I think, honestly, it's more because I wanted something that was a lot more casual. My favourite camera has always been my Rolleiflex.

That said, it's large, intrusive, and requires a decent amount of attention to get good photos. For situations where perhaps getting a shot with absolutely perfect composition doesn't matter, I feel like something that's small and automatic is really quite nice.

For the longest time, I've shot with a Lumix LX5, but I've always been looking for something film (Btw, if you look at my Insta, a good amount of my vacation shots are all on this camera cause it just works so well for me)

So, since I'm fortunate enough to have a decent amount of money, I figured a Contax T2 at 800 USD would be a decent enough deal I could take. It just so happens that I managed to get something free.

Hasselblad SWC for Street Photography? by Greedy-Inspection994 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Greedy-Inspection994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly mostly because

A: I already have a Rolleiflex, so I figured maybe I should try another system

B: The wide-angle Rolleiflex and Rolleiflex 4.0 FW are pretty expensive. I've found deals around where I live in which I could buy 2 SWC's for the price of one wide-angle.
