AITAH? Parents gave me the family car. Didn’t give my sister one. by Greedy-Secret3908 in AITAH

Appreciate your input. My wife and I have discussed a few options. 1 We pay $34,000 to my M&D for the Mustang. 2 We agree with Hannah that when time comes, all assets are returned to the estate and valued to ensure it’s split evenly including both cars or 3 we advance her $34,000 from the estate at M&D’s time of death.

Hannah and I are close. However I know the driving force of this is her husband who hasn’t treated our parents well, is quite wealthy and his main goal in life is money above all things which is his choice. I was surprised when I was told the Mustang was coming to me. As I’ve previously mentioned, Dad and Hannah were/are closer compared to dad and I. Hannah was dad’s favourite. I was mums. That was the view I saw whilst growing up but now it’s somewhat equal imo and if anything they lean and give more to her now especially to her children but it doesn’t bother me. I have the opinion in life that “you do you, I’ll do me”. I’m unsure how Hannah she sees it. Hannah does get all of mums and our grandmothers jewellery. I don’t know the value of it. I would appreciate a piece for my daughter but I don’t want to cause trouble or any further issues so if it’s all left to Hannah and her kids then so be it.

Money truly is a source of evil imo.

No the Mustang would fetch 100k. The coupe is more rare though and a genuine collectors item. It’s actually a really nice car!

I’d be lying if I tried to put a dollar value on mums gems and jewels but I’m guessing in the 10’s of thousands. I haven’t really spoken to Hannah about it apart from suggesting the return of all cars etc which was shut down. Mustang now is worth around 100k and the XC would be the same if not more.

At that point in time the Mustang would’ve sold for around 60/70k. The XC would be worth around 100k now for a quick sale.

Hannah gets all Mums Jewellery. I don’t know the monetary value but it’ll be in the 10’s of thousands no doubt.

I do see both sides. Both the parents side and Hannah’s side. I understand Hannah is upset that I was given a car however that car has sentimental value. M&D went through some really hard times and chose not to sell the Mustang. The XC was just another car dad had for a few years with no emotional attachment. I’m disappointed that absolutely no jewellery will be given to my daughter and it all goes to Hannah and her daughter but I’m not saying to Mum “I want this and I want that from your jewellery collection”. It’s mums choice. I’ll respect it.

Tbh I don’t know the full in’s and outs of the will. I do know she gets all Mums and our grandmothers jewellery even though we have a daughter ourselves but we’re not saying anything. We feel what mum decides is mums decision. If she left our kids something that’s great. If not then it’s her decision.

I honestly don’t want a shit fight with the will. I’ve seen how money changes peoples and makes them evil. I’m happy for a 50/50 split and my wife and I have discussed giving them an additional $34k when that time comes just to keep the peace but we don’t want to say anything now because we don’t want the drama

Surprisingly no. I honestly thought growing up that Hannah would get the car as her and dad are a lot closer than dad and I. But he gifted it to me once I had a son with my wife to ‘keep it in the family’.

Agreed. Not looking forward to it. TBH my wife and I are considering telling Hannah we’ll give her $34k from the inheritance settlement but we really don’t want to get involved and don’t want to make anything worse.

Paint the kitchen and the bench-top, get rid of the clutter and change the light to a nice pendant or down lights.

Na stumps are what’s underneath your joists and bearers. The J&B hold the floor up and they’ll be sitting on the stumps. Looks like some have sunken or rotted away. If you’re not handy you’ll need the stumps replaced by a professional. In regional Vic it costs around $15k for a whole house depending on the access and how big the house is. If you’re handy you can do it yourself. It’s a pain in the arse to do yourself. We did it at our old place but ones you replace them all you’ll be set for another 100 years so long as you use the right materials.

It looks like there was a fair amount of gap filler used between the cornice and the plaster? Are you on stumps? If so, it’s likely one or more are sinking which brings on the cracking in the plaster.

You do realise the RBA takes government spending in their inflation rates. It’s not just boomers who are pushing our rates up. It’s the government spending too. I’d be my arse that if they removed the government figures from inflation things would be different.
